My brother's neighor is a mechanic at a reputable vw shop here in town(KC).He is building a stroker motor for his bug so his 1835cc(3 months old engine )is for sale.I would like to get your opinion on the engine plus the "deal"he is giving me.As I said the engine is 3 monts old,and the specs are:
- Compression ratio 8.5-1
- rods are balanced stock vw
- p/c-Mahle 92mm forgred
- camshaft-Engle 110 with aluminum gear
- Empi lightweight lifters
- chromoly pushrods
- stockrocker shafts 1.1:1 ratio
- srock VW cylinder heads 39mm intake,35mm exhaust
- 12# lightened chromoly flywheel
- dual Weber 44 carbs
- billet sump plate, fuel block off
- ss amp alternator
- Bosch 009 dist
- heavy duty 30mm oil pump
- remote oil filter.Farm PH8A

He is asking $1500 plus my 1600cc dp stock engine with dual 40idf.Installation is included in the price. He claims the engine has 90-95hp.So,do you think I should consider buying the engine or not.Is it a good deal? All comments are welcome. Thanks in advance

Ron,
I don't think you can just "Swap" in some 94's. I believe you have to re-machine the case for the '94's.
If the 92's are the worst. 94's must be worster.
Plus, the area behind #3 cylinder gets real thin and prone to crack with 92's or 94's. That is unless you beef up the case by welding or use one of the "Super Cases" that are available.

If concerned about wall thickness just swap the pistons and cylinders for 90.5's; they'll fit right in. Then maybe you can get some work done on the heads to lower compression to about 6.9 to 1 and get them ported with heavy duty springs. The engine will run a lot cooler and if set up right will perform incredibly too.
For the price, I would say run it at the 1835 with the 92s and when it gets tired a few years down the line, then redo the top end. The 44 idfs are a little big- it would run better with the 40's I feel.

If you swap in 90.5s, maybe you can flycut the heads a few thousands and get your compression up to maybe 9:1 to make up for the loss of displacement. It will run excellent on pump premium. I wouldn't go any lower then 8.5:1.
