It cost me $50 and I'd really be pissed if it wasn't so damn funny.

I'm nearly finished fixing up the silver Speedster I recently purchased in Morro Bay. I needed to replace the turn signal lever and switch unit, because it would not cancel automatically following a turn. I bought an Empi replacement unit for $50 and tore into it. I soon realized that the wire colors were not exactly the same as on the orignal unit and that's a big problem for me because I'm color blind. So, I enlisted the help of my wife Thuan and we matched up the colors as close as we could and connected it up.

Time to test it, so left turn first and the left turn signal blinks. Right turn next and ....... THE HORN BLOWS!!!! I couldn't stop laughing and I still can't when ever I tell someone about it. Like my neighbor said, the only thing funnier would have been if the windshield wipers would have come on when I dimmed the high beams.

It turned out that we actually did have the wiring correct, but the unit itself was faulty and was shortng out against the steering column causing the horn to blow. Just to add insult to injury, I discovered that there was a small spring in the original unit that had come unhooked and I replaced it and reinstalled the original unit and it now works fine. I can't return the POS Empi unit because I butchered it trying to make it work, but the laugh was almost worth the $50.

Ok ! I know how fustraighting the aftermarket stuff is getting.

If I were you I'd take another look at it Asking my self what would make this work correct. and proceed to modify it into a useable spare.

We have some pretty clever guys here. Post a pic and lets have at it.. Your already in for a penny. Hopefuly it wont take a pound to fix it up rebox it and I'd re wire it to match my cars codes while I was at it

I have 2 spares here , and It's always nice to know you have a backup part in house.

If ya need some wires I have stocked ALL of the GM colors in 100ft rolls for the Autowire gig. Email me a color list amd mail address and I'll snip you some 2 ft strands.. I also have loads of connector cases and terminals like the VWs use. as well as the common GM..6 plug connectors. Very compatable..

Next time you can make it a plug and play,, Install..
This thread reminds me of a memorable trip I made as a passenger in my dad's new Plymouth. Every time you moved the steering wheel more than a few degrees, the horn would blow. We had to drive twelve miles thru suburban traffic to get to the dealer. Really glad I wasn't driving!
hi alan, took the left wheel of,looked at my mastercylinder ,found what looks like the switch and took the wires off ,finally the breaklights went off, then i noticed a similar switch at the frontpart of the mastercylinder and put the cables by chance on and resolved all the problems, all the lights work, blinker, breaks, backlights like a charm, lucky ?hope so ,thanks for any info, herbert hofer.
