Door Stop

I have a cmc and was wondering if there is something you guys use to make door stops. The hinges allow it to swing open more than it should and the fiberglass hits on the body. Anyways I saw a picture of one car and it looked like it had a door stop is there a easy way to make one or I was thinking like rubber on the body to at least soften the impact.

My Intermecannica has a half round rubber ball that is glued to the inside of the door jam where the door makes contact. This works as a cushion for the door and it keeps the door halves from breaking apart. Iv'e had the doors on several CMCs break the front skin off the door.

I use about a 2 inch piece of foam pipe insulation and I cut it in half. One side still has the sticky stuff and I just insert it to the right location. Works great, it's cheap and it's simple.

My JPS used the top half of the suspension stop rubber he cut off, glued to the door jamb. It worked pretty well.

I have seen some cars use a leather strap going from the inside door edge to the inside of the footwell upright. An old piece of real leather belt would look good, and could be had for about $1 at a thrift store.

I like look of leather strap for period look. You can get the chrome luggage tie down hooks from a 912/911. I used that stiff white foam stuff used in shipping electronics (not the Styrofoam stuff). A hunk shoved in either side works great.

Leather is nice.......but it stretches over time. A very short time, as a matter of fact.

If you want a kit that looks like it's made for it, go to your local Jeep dealer and get a pair of door straps and tie-downs for a jeep CJ or Wrangler. They're made of non-stretch woven vinyl and are about 2" wide. You can screw the body mounts into the frame upright and back up the door mounts with a treaded strap of 1/8" X 1" steel stock behind the fiber glass.

Cheap (about $30 bucks for both sides), look good (mine are black, but they had several colors when I got mine), and work great.

I used some leather strap I obtained from a local leather shop (I've changed the straps to black leather since these phots were taken)and chrome cap plates ordered from an off-road vehicle web site.

It seems that Jeeps have the same issue with the doors opening too far.

I vote for Troy, the pipe foam no one sees it and your're done in two minutes.

62-79 Beetle proper door check strap and stop, in my opinion, is the way to go (I wonder why)... Takes a bit to fit it up proper, BUT once fit it is infallible, no stretch, no BS.
