There are some outstanding Speedsters here - Howard's Blue IM with 3.2L 911 Porsche and all 911 underpinnings is a stand out; Mary's "beige" IM with Subbie power. That said even a lowly CMC with T1 1600 cc engine can be fun and rewarding car.
One that runs well and is paid for.
For now...
Berg 5, narrowed irs arms, 7" Fuchs alloys with 205's or 215's, and either type 3 brakes or discs on the back, 6" alloys and discs up front, 2386cc type 1 that revs to 6 or 6500 with power; wait, that's what I'm working on in the garage now...
I think I'll like my IM6 when I get it.
Stock body swing axle car on a pan. Wide 5's, beehives, legit pre-A gauges, umbrella handle parking brake. CB Perf 2110 with whatever Pat Downs thinks is right to make about 140 horses at about 6000 rpm. Early fan shroud, custom throttle linkage to look period-correct. Oil filter canister next to generator stand. A-1 pipes.
Normal late transmission with .92 4th and 3.88 R&P, built to the usual standards (hardened keys, welded 3rd and 4th, super diff, blah blah), plus a limited slip diff.
Kafer brace, front sway bar on a slightly narrowed beam, 2-inch drop spindles and front discs, with the beam stiffeners and/or a welded beam. Camber compensator in back. Rear torsion bars indexed for a 1.5-inch drop. Adjustable arms. 16 x 5 steelies with 185-60-16 track tires.
Bumper delete. Chrome delete. Shorty perspex windshield. Headrest fairing.
Aluminum panel interior, bare floors. Aluminum seat bucket with aged leather padding. Crowe harness.
Bolt-in 6-point cage, SCCA hillclimb compliant.
Finished in Code 510 Radium green. Painted blank white rondels. Then distressed to look 60 years old.
Since being on this list you can see the choices vary quite a bit. I just finished, a Full Subie, 2.5L NA engine, 5 speed subie trans, full 911SC porsche front end, type 1 or early 944 rear trailing arms, fuchs, Recaro seats, more of a classic look.
I think I'll like my IM6 when I get it.
I'm sure you will.
Ron:
If it works out, perhaps we can go for a run together when I am out in Vancouver getting the car?

Maybe someone will have an empty right seat?
Option II:
IM Roadster body, roll up windows, umbrella handle e-brake, later 356 gauge package. Vintage Speed shifter, proper bend. Saddle leather interior, heated seats, fully-lined convertible top, Blaupunkt old-school-looking radio with mp3 jack hidden. Square weave carpet, A/C. Lempert Wheel in mahogany & light walnut. Matching shift knob.
Engine is 2.5 Subaru with SOHC heads from a 2.2 (AKA "Frankenstein"). Normally-aspirated, delta cams, recurved fuel and spark to give 185 hp@ 6000 and about the same in torque from about 4000 rpm.
Late Beetle box built as usual with .89 4th and 3.44 R&P. LSD.
Mendeola suspension, front and rear. four-wheel discs under 16 x6 and 16 x 7 Fuchs. Teardrop tail lights, Marchal fogs, through the bumperette exhaust tips. Stock Porsche Roadster trip and badging.
So far, the replies are as expected.
My list: Outlaw Coupe
Tube frame
A-Arm suspension all around
4 corner disc brakes w/ aluminum covers
lowered 2.5" front and 1-3/4" rear
watercooled 170-200 HP (whatever will fit)
Single tip center exhaust
Air conditioning
Basic interior with speedster seats in red leather.
Ivory 5704
5.5" steel wide five pattern wheels. No hub caps.
My previous VS with 1835, Kadrons, A-1 Sidewinder, 3:88. Daily driver, get in, starts on first bump, driven all over Western states (CA, OR, WA, NV, UT, CO) logged 100,000 trouble-free miles with no muss and no fuss.
After accident, replaced that car with 2nd (current) VS with 1915, Kadrons, A-1 Sidewinder, 3:88. Daily driver, get in, starts on first bump, logged 10,000 trouble-free miles in past 8 months with no muss and no fuss.
That's the beauty of this 'Madness'! Everyone can put their flavor on their car and enjoy the pleasure of cruising down the road viewing the world through a 356 windshield!
Life is good!
"Pearl the Speedstah"
Stout 2,110
late VW cooling + external oil cooler (sits at 200°F forever)
Late Ghia front disks
IRS rear with Super Beetle rear drums
19mm anti-sway bars front and rear
Kafer Brace
3:88 transaxle (although a 901 5-speed would be nice)
Bilstein shocks
6" wide, 16" Fuchs with 205 Michelin tires
Wicked comfortable cruising seats
Like Jim, starts on the first bump, pulls very strong, gets 26-30mpg, sounds wonderful and eats Mustangs for breakfast.
what more could I want?
Oh! To finally get my BN2 heater going and installed (my procrastination)
Regretfully the dream build has a $70k+ build tag!
I had a big long list, but I deleted it.
I really like what I've got.
I can't think of anything except maybe wide 5's, Boyd C wheels and bigger brake disks for safety ... I'm happy with her as she is:
Tom, loved your combo for a Speedster, thanks for letting me drive it! Suby is sweet!
I am completely satisfied with my air cooled silver coupe.... really...I wouldn't change a thing..it was just what I wanted and what I ordered.
I would have changed the exhaust to something a LOT quieter but some good headphones did the trick.
