As a non-Canadian citizen you should have no problem taking a car cross the border as long as you take it with you out again.

As you can see from the government text (below), you can temporarily bring almost any car into Canada from the US.

For the insurance, check with your company.

RIV program exemptions
You can import a vehicle from the United States
without registering it with the RIV program if one
of the following applies:
■ The vehicle is 15 years old or older (excluding buses).
The age of a vehicle is determined by the month
and year it was manufactured. Do not use the model
year. The age is located on the manufacturer
Ernie, this isn't complicated.
Just drive up to the border like you're on vacation, which I assume you are. Answer the questions asked by Canada Customs and enjoy a great time visiting North of the 49th Parallel. You should make sure your insurance covers you in Canada, if not get additional coverage for the trip.

While in the Vancouver area make sure to visit Henry at Intermeccanica (www.intermeccanica.com) as there is always something interesting in the works.
If you're vacationing in July don't forget the Intermeccanica Tour & BBQ weekend is July 11-13 (IM ownership is not required to attend - even rental cars are OK). This is a great event and you can see photos of previous Tours on the IM web site.

They don't call it "Beautiful B.C." for nothing. Enjoy your visit.
Hey kids... here is what I learned today.
Betsy from my carrier, Motorsports Insurance Services (So Cal) called to indicate that my 4000 mile round trip was NO PROBLEMO, period. She did mention that I would need a Canadian insurance registration card from Grundy, her underwriter. She went on to say that the card would be in my grubby lil' paws in less than a week. AND there are NO extra charges.
WooHoo! Trust me, I really did not want to make this trip in my wife's Prius, so I was very ready to pay extra if needed.
Special thanks go to Angela who turned me onto Betsy & company when I was fed up with Haggerty's stingy mileage restrictions.... Angela, as you said, Betsy ROCKS! (and so do you BTW)
