ALAN, IM NOT A MECHANIC BUT IN LAYMANS TERMS I SIMPLY TURNED THE KEY TO THE RIGHT, PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE NOT USING THE CLUTCH, PRESSED ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR WENT BACKWARDS WITH NO NOISE. WAS LIKE DRIVING A GOLF CART. PUT THE CAR IN THIRD WITHOUT USING THE CLUTCH AND TOOK IT FOR A DRIVE AROUND THE BLOCK. GOT UP TO 50 IN THIRD GEAR IN NO TIME. WHEN I GOT BACK JOHN TOLD ME IF I WOULD HAVE PUT IT IN FOURTH IT WOULD HAVE GONE MUCH FASTER. ABSOLUTELY NOISE FREE
Gerd:

There's a surprising number of those electro-volks conversions kicking around. I tried to interest the guys at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (www.wpi.edu) in converting Pearl, but they're off in another direction (told me they converted a VW Vanagon a few years ago, so that's old hat!)

Here's a site from MIT: http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2007/porsche-0605.html

and another one for the conversions themselves: http://www.electroauto.com/gallery/vp914.shtml

Pretty cool stuff....

Umm - do electric bikes count? I'm obsessed with electric assisted bikes!

I have three electrics. My pride is a Day 6 bike with a Bionx motor on the rear and a Lithium Ion battery, been riding it for over a year and a half.

This week I put together a 48 volt 25 amp front wheel drive electric bike which hit 25 mph easy.

Also a 36 volt which I use to haul a trailer.

There is a Tadpole (two front wheels and one rear) here in town and the owner claims 35 mph with a Bionx 500 Watt motor.

Would be cool if I could get a battery from a wrecked Prius or something. DeWalt lithium batteries have been tried.
