How difficult is this project? I've done a little research, and it appears to be fairly easy to do. Shops want 80-100 to do the task. Unless I'm missing something, you just get a uni-syn or similar, equalize the idles, and then adjust the mixtures by 'ear'. Is this an acceptable way to go? I'm curious as to what others do on this issue.
..my last project before heading to Knotts.

Just remember that every procedure you read can be a little different. Soem have you changing the air bypass acrews and some do not. Some say set the mixtures at one place to start and others recommend a different setting. It is the process that works - not necessarily the settings that people recommend.

In my last attempt with brand new carbs, the settings were off from side to side on the mixtures. It turns out the mixture screws were different shaped on each carb. These variables will set you off if you are tryingto follow the procedure to the letter...

When you get into it though, you will hear the engine respond and it will be evident when you are getting them closer to the sweet spot.

It should take a couple of hours the first time, unless you have a vacuum leak- then it will take the rest of your earthly existance. Buy a Weber book from one of the many advertisers in Hot VW, or do a web search for Weber sync (I think redline has a pretty good set of instructions for IDFs). One of the hard parts is getting to the screws on a Vintage/ CMC/ JPS body. On my 40IDF equipped CMC (old car), I made a screwdriver by cutting the tip off of a driver, and welding a nickle to it- it's that tight. Good luck.
