Ok. Just picked this girl up Sunday. I figure it's based off a 57.5/58. But, I have no idea who made it? Are there any telltale signs? She hasn't ran/moved in 4 years, working on that now. Got her to fire up this evening, and promptly ordered a new gas tank and carb rebuild kits. PO claims it was a "1700cc" engine. Yeah. Well, I know the jugs aren't 85.5 just by glancing at them, I'm guessing 90.5's which would put her at a 1776cc. Kadron dual 40's. Seems to be super well built. I know VW's, I know kit cars and dune buggies. I know NOTHING about 356 reps except I've wanted one for about 20 years and finally own one. The badge on the lower R/F fender appears to be an OG badge with "Custom Coachwork" that doesn't look legit. Font looks, off, for the period. Obviously, I have no idea, just guessing. What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance!

All my research said VS, just nothing definitive. PO said it was built in CA in 02. I specifically asked him if it was VS, and he said no. "Orange county motors" or some ****. He bought it in 04 for $19,500, which he claims he felt was "$500 too much". She has a mere 3510 miles on the build

I'll try and snap pics of the engine bay and frunk tomorrow.

Thanks!

Stand at the rear on each side and look at both front fenders.  If it bows out slightly above the right front tire it was probably molded by Vintage.  Mine is a 2007 build and has a 1776.  I have heard he also sells bodies to JPS so the bulge would probably narrow it down to just those two.  My 1776 has been a great motor IMO, and my gearing is just right for it.

"So is VS a good or bad thing?"

Depends on you.  My VS has been sensational with 7 Carlisle trips of 2,000 miles each plus one Trip to the West Coast event. a total of 43,000 miles.I believe that Vintage Speedsters have made the East to West Coast trip as many times as  any other brand and maybe more times than a few other brands---without a breakdoown on the way accross or back.

I also have a garage full of trophies and a couple of "Best Of Shows" earned by my VS.

Yes, it is considered an "entry level" because it is the "value" brand Speedster, but improvements made can get it way up past how it starts out.

There are Speedster replicas that are quite expensive and some are spectacular and loaded with the latest gimmics for those who enjoy bragging rights, but none could provide more pure fun and rewarding adventures than my VS has given me.

So if you get your car sorted, make the standard improvements to make it suitable your purposes it can be a very good thing. Do read "Are you ready for a Speedster replica" on this site for some solid info about these cars.

But I never met a Speedster of any brand that I didn't like!

What?? The original didn't have an automatic sandwich maker and toaster and a heads up display?

Actually--you are so right.  Replica to me means sorta like the original car but as we know, to each his own is just fine in this group.  With 140 foot pounds of torque  I can't exactly call myself a "purist"  either---LOL.

Dam, I bet that makes it fun Jack. I knew Jake WAY back in the day when he was first getting started doing his engine blows at the Commerce show. Smart dude.

I've got a case sitting on my work bench now. Bored, clearanced for 82mm crank, and tapped for full flow. Also a pair of brand new 40x35 heads. Was planning on building a 2110 for Das Thing, and of course it looks like that now end up in the speedster instead.

Got her fired up last night, barely, Kadrons are junk. What struck me as odd was the heat riser tubes off the stock muffler are wide open. Certainly this thing couldn't have been like that for the past 13 years...

Still almost positive it is a Vintage, but very possibly bought as a kit and the engine was installed by "Orange County motors."  The interior is 100% Vintage, but there are many CMC and Fiberfab cars that have been redone with Vintage supplied interiors and modified from the 4 gauge dash to the 3 gauge.

I'll bet you money that torsion bar hole is faux; if it's real it isn't a Vintage.  Take a close look.  Still want to see engine compartment pics.

I'll get some engine bay pics soon.

I thought I had set a signature with my name in it, but it appears no signatures are visible now that I take a look! I'm Walt, from Winston Salem, NC. It appears that isn't showing either.

I guess virtually any engine can be built to be reliable, but I really don't like any bigger than thick wall 90.5's. Got plenty of other go fast toys, I just want good reliable power. Hell, I don't even know what's in this thing yet. Might be plenty happy with whatever it is! (minus the Kadrons).

My car was 'finished' by Vintage. I have that same hole in my firewall. I bet if we compare the location of the hole where little red wire passes through, I bet they are in nearly the exact same spot.

Is there a large hole beind the fan shroud right about where the 'fan' is located?
