early IM speedster gelcoated or painted?

anyone know if the early IM speedsters were sold with a gelcoat finish or painted? what are thoughts on gelcoat finish? Can it be spot repaired? Are they any good?

Paul, My '78 is unpainted. The bumpers were sometime in the past but the body is bare. I use boat wax to shine it up and it looks like well aged old laquer to me. With some spot repair I think you would have to paint over the primer after repair. Could be a tough match of finish and/or color. Rick
There are people that can match the gel coat in the repair. Usually a boat shop. If you want to brighten up that gel coat, consider power buffing it with a rubbing compound and then a glaze. Shines it right up.
