Hi, guys and gals....long time no post. Well I would like to find a early IM pan based Speedster. The one white one recently sold on BAT was perfect but I was in the middle of buying a house so I didn't pull the trigger but should have. IMHO at $20k from the photos it was "well bought". A clean CA title would be preferred. I'm interested in anything from a roller to a turn key car.

Dave Welcome Back ! There are small differences between an early pan based IM, a FF or CMC is a close second. The IM had composite blocks that support the front and rear bumpers, also had additional horizontal bracing off the rear portion of the VW chassis to the IM 20 ga. steel inner structure. Other than the embossed IM name on the deck lid hinges that's about all the difference there is. As far as the FF - CMC but sag that's an easy fix by replacing the rivets on the vertical wheel well wall with 5 1/6 bolts and Panel Bond adhesive, additionally you can add a length of steel between the vertical behind the door jamb attaching the other end back around the taillights.

Thanks Alan. Any help would be appreciated. I'm looking specifically for a IM that still is wearing its factory roll stamp ID. I want one that Henry's dad likely had his hands on..this photo is from the one sold on BAT 12-12-19. Original white gelcoat.

Thanks buddy...my Fiat 124 was fun as are my 911’s but I just want a basic Speedster. It will have a T-4 and 5 speed when I’m done.

I test drove that white IM in SF last year for an SOC member. At that point, I have never driven an IM before.
I believe I wrote about it last year on here, but to summarize, I used to believe IM owners were rather snobbish about their IM's. And even though the white one in SF is an older driver-quality car, the quality of the build is still there. While I love my VS, there's no denying the IM overall is a more quality piece. The front bonnet alone, probably weighs 2.5 times my VS's.

It could be fun but I’m passing on the white car...guys nuts for the $27k asking price.
Dave, sometimes you just have to let them hold on to it for longer when they have illusions on the value of their car. When that happens the need to hang onto their dreams.
Dave I agree on the price. I was thinking it might be a good platform being an IM. $20k is probably a more realistic price this time of year.
Most cars that age unless completely redone need a lot of work.
Just because it is an IM does not mean it does not need refreshing.
There are others who have 30 year old cars who also want as lot for there cars thinking maybe that they have colletors value when all along Greg builds new one for that price.
So in conclusion, at 20K It is absolutely a more realistic price... period 
I was thinking more like $15k then found out it’s not a virgin. It’s been wrecked and repaired.
