I got my Speedster back last week with my new 2176cc engine and wanted to send kudos out and let you all know about the builder. His name is Kurt Mezger and he is out of West Chester, PA (near Philly and Dover, DE). This guy is "no BS" and was not out to only sell me an engine like other builders out there. I got a complete SOLUTION. He was meticulous, thorough, etc... everything was thought through right down to putting in press in studs to reinforce the wheels to handle the additonal power and torque. NO OTHER builder I talked to EVER touched on a lot of the issues that will matter down the road... they wanted to build me an engine, ship it, and wash there hands of it... no warranty, no backing their work, etc. Kurt built the engine, installed it, wouldn't give it back to me until HE was satisfied, and has called me several times already to make sure everything is OK. He will be servicing the engine at 1000 miles. He built an awesome engine... I can "chirp third" with no problem and there is plenty of torque. I did my research on this and Kurt comes highly recommended in the VW community. His work has been featured many times in VW Trends, he has a good relationship with the owners of companies like Performance Technology, Der Transaxle, Web Cam, etc... in fact, they even sponsor his racing in which owns a record. All of this should speak for itself. Vintage Performance has a website located at www.vintageperformance.net with some video downloads. All of his contact information is there as well. If you are in the market for a new engine, I HIGHLY recommend Kurt.

I mentioned the site to Kurt, but he is "not allowed" to post on discussion groups by his wife. ;-) hahaha!!! Seriously, he doesn't have the time with all the work and racing he does... and we know how heated some of these debates can get. But, I can assure you he is really good and innovative at what he does. As I said in my first posting, he sees the whole picture... and as examples of being thorough and creative, look at the photos in my files area. You can see the things he did to ensure the engine stays cool.
George is exactly right. Due to proximity, weather, and such Kurt actually delivered my car to me. He wanted to have some highway time with it that he wasn't going to otherwise have due to coming bad weather. So, he drove down with another vehicle following in case any adjustments needed to be made. And, depsite it being late when they arrived in DC from PA, he spent all the time needed until I had an understanding of everything he had done, how to care for the engine, make adjustments, etc. I don't think he can deliver cars/engines to everyone (I am probably an exception being that I am only a couple of hours from his shop), but I am sure that every engine gets that kind of attention at the shop. When I initially contacted him, he took the time to listen to what I wanted... he didn't just tell me what "I needed". I can say that at the end of this process I got EXACTLY what he said I was getting and it EXCEEDED my expectations. The car runs and performs beautifully... much better than when I handed him the keys. It's like a new car not only because of the engine but because of the tweaks and adjustments he made to everything else... suspension, brakes, etc. I can't say enough good things.
Colton, Glad to see you found someone that did the job right for you. Kurt is a good guy, but I have never met him, we share many of the same suppliers.

It is rare that someone wil find a top notch builder to do the engine install work, I used to do it, but liabilities with the vehicles and install work stopped me from going any further, as many folks are just waiting for their throttle to stick and wipe out their car so you can buy their next house for them....I wish I could install my engines, but there is just way too many risks involved today.

Please don't think that I'm one of those guys that builds and engine and forgets about it, some of my customers from over 5-8 years ago still are in touch with me, and I'm good friends with many of them.

Like I said, glad to see you are enjoying the new engine.
