Well, I could certainly do the trip on Thursday, but I don't know how many others contemplating the Northeast Caravan have to work and couldn't make the Thursday departure date. I also don't have the hotel reservation for thursday night, but I'll bet that would be OK, too.

I'll leave it up to those joining us - Thursday departure/caravan or Friday??

Just received a driving tip from Andy Burger (he's registered for Carlisle):

"I'm not sure if you all have locked in on a route to Carlisle from New York or the NorthEast. This past weekend I drove back and forth to southern WV from New Jersey. My route out was I80 to I81 south, driving past Carlisle. My return trip was 81 North through Carlisle to I78 East back into New Jersey.

'Road Under Construction' 81 south from I80. About 30 miles of one lane worth. Traffic was slow and the road was in questionable condition on 81 south north of Harrisburg before the intersection of I78... I78 was clean (normally under construction). Anyway, just wanted to pass on that information".

If anyone has any questions you might want to e-mail Andy (mail@andrewburger.com)

My formula for the first few test rides is a few single laps around the block glancing into the rear view mirror to see what I may have be leaving behind.
At the end of each successful lap, it's back to the home shop to tighten this and check for fluids that may appear to be leaving the the car without the owners consent. Then upgrade to a two lap stint
(again utilizing the mirror for any departing item(s).Prior to embarking, this is a good time to slap on a tag of some sorts to make the car appear a bit more legal. Step three is to see if you can make it to a gas station because the small amount of gas from the mower can is dwindling fast. Once you have given the car a decent "drink" you can certify the speedster as road worthy and run it out to 55 mph! Hope all goes well for you ....we'll see you at Carlisle !

Got my official "Carlisle Import Kit/Replicar Nationals" brochure in the mail today. There we were mentioned under the "Show Field" heading.

East Coast Speedster Meet:
The Carlisle Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals will host the 2004 East Coast Speedster Meet. Some of finest Speedsters in the nation will attend the meet. Oh, and George Brown's car will be there too. (Just kidding George)

Can't wait!

Drove up to Cumberland, RI the other night, and stopped in Fall River, MA on the return for gas (mostly to see if my new fuel sender gasket was sealing).

As I'm about to hop in and leave, this woman in a Land Rover pulls in front of me, blocking my exit, then hops out and says, "I LOVE that car.....Where can I get one? It's a replica, right?"

Sure threw me for a loop, but I recovered and told her about the various companies making them and how they're all outside of New England but easy to work with if she really was interested.

Then I told her that they would all be at Carlisle. She got excited and told me that her in-laws live just the other side of Harrisburg, they were going to visit them soon anyway, and she could combine the two and make Carlisle, too!

Looks like EVERYONE's getting excited about this show!

More icing on the cake... At every automotive event Carlisle has an indoor invitational display for the weekend and exceptional examples of that weekend's type of cars are featured. I'm pleased to announce that Brian Hawthornthwaite's black & tan Intermeccanica Speedster was invited and will be on display in the exhibition building during the weekend.

Thanks to Henry Reisner for handling the transportation of Brian's car from Brian's home in South Carlina to Carlisle and back. And a special thanks to Brian who is not able to attend along with his car but has agreed to allow it to be transported to Carlisle for the exhibit - I have a feeling Brian would like to be where his car is going to be in 10 days! If you haven't seen Brian's beauty in a while, check it out at
www.speedsterowners.com/files/thmblist.asp?sf=/BigDrag

It's good to know one of our fellow SO.com's Speedsters will be in the invitational display. Thanks Brian and Henry!!

#34 So.com registration just in - Greg Gerber from New Jersey! Greg says "I've registered for Carlisle. Just registered at speedsterowners.com last week. My car was delivered from Chicago on Tuesday. CMC - 1955 Porsche Speedster flared (just purchased/almost complete [needs top & tonneau, door handles, a motor lid latch]).Black with red interior, 66 VW donor, 1600 cc eng (just rebuilt), dual Weber carbs, 5 bolt Porsche wheels, basically, 0 miles on the kit".

Alright Greg! That's a total of 41 registrations! You've heard not being able to see the forest for the trees, well they're not going to be able to see the Cobras for the Speedsters. See you at Carlisle!
Carlisle advertises the Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals show field as "non-competition". The Speedster Meet will follow the same format with a non-competive, have fun atmosphere....with one exception. The person who drives the most miles to Carlisle in their Speedster will receive the "Longest Distance Traveled Award". A photo of the award is posted below. So keep track of your mileage and sign-in on the distance award entry sheet at the Speedster hospitality tent.

The winner will be announced at the Saturday raffle or dinner that evening - we'll let you know soon.

Hey! John Estes is the other Speedster here in Rhode Island on the SOC!! (it gets lonely when there's only two of us). He's the reason I had to change my tag line to "one of the two Speedster Guys in Rhode Island"

John is in Matunuck, Rhode Island, way down on the Southern end of the state (sounds like a long way, but it's only about 1.5 hours from me with traffic, 'cause nothing's direct)

I've also seen a black, flared CMC in Barrington (North end of the state) but there's never anyone home when I stop in. I'll keep trying - it would be nice to have a real group to do rides with!!

Route listing, with ETA's to waypoints, going out Tomorrow, along with the list of people joining us and where.

Looks like, along with the NJRC members joining us, we'll have about 12 cars, both Speedsters and Spyders, by the time we hit Carlisle.

Should be quite a sight!!
Let's start with an update from the Part I:

Okay, guys and gals....Spring is here and it's time to register for the East Coast National Speedster Meet in Carlisle, Pa. Why should you register now rather than later? At least three reasons:

First, if we get 25 registrations before April 25th Carlisle will erect our very own hospitility tent for all three days dedicated to the Speedster group and best of all....for free! Note: This has already been accomplished so watch for the tent!!!

Second: The Carlisle folks are well aware of our planned event and are rolling out the red carpet for us with perks not given to other groups(such as Speedster-specific seminars, building use, special mention, etc). BUT if they see low registrations and it LOOKS like we will have a low turnout (because many of us are waiting until "later" to register) then they just may decide to put their eggs in another basket - like give them to the Cobra groups! YUKKKKK!

Third: Registering is easy and it only costs $15 for you, a passenger and your car for all three days. Reminder: registration increases to $25 on April 25. Just follow the simple instructions posted here: speedsterseast.home.att.net/register.htm Register today!!!

Out of 60+ Speedster owners who said they are coming, following are the registrations under "Speedsterowners.com" I am aware of so far, if you've registered and your name is not on this list please let me know:

Hey Gordon, one of the episodes of Rocky and Bullwinkle (ie. "Rocky the Flying Squirrel") led me to believe that "there is no place to go in Rhode Island." The story line was that one of the evil doers had put a chain on the state and towed it out to sea and when the small furry mammal and friend arrived at the border, there truly was no place to go. Thank you for clearing up this misunderstanding that I, and perhaps others, have carried since the sixties.

NO, it's TRUE!

They keep towing the entire state out to sea and disguising it as one of the islands!

One time it'll be Nantucket, another time Martha's Vinyard, and other times even as Block Island. I think the Navy does it just to hide the place from terrorists (but the terrorists can't find us, either).
There are Little Rhoady old timers who never leave the state, 'cause to do so would mean having to go over a bridge, and you never know if they've towed the state out to sea and there's nothing at the other end of the bridge (and I'm not making his up....)

Did you know that the correct, full name for this state is: "Rhode Island and the Providence Plantation"?

Anyway, 2/3'rds of the known Speedster population of the ENTIRE STATE is going to Carlisle......How many states can top THAT???
