At least it isn't a Yugo being given away. However, if a Yugo is integrated into a state of the art home theater system some kind of way, that might be pretty neat. Perhaps there could be the makings of a book here, 1,000 uses for old, otherwise useless cars. Perhaps the a sound system could include some synthesized backfiring and gear grinding. I wish I had a big downstairs family room.....this is beginning to sound like a plan.
A quick update on the East Coast Speedster Meet and we need some feedback from you:

I've been in touch with Mike Kelsch, the Event Manager at Carlisle Productions, Inc. He informed me they are still planning seminars and the entire weekend agenda and plan to increase the number of seminars from last year's event. He said "If you can think of anyone for me to contact regarding a Speedster specific seminar, I would be happy to do the legwork". Any suggestions? It would be great to get someone we REALLY want to see and hear from the east coast but there's no reason they can't be from elsewhere in the country (or the world). I am assuming they pay some or all of the expenses for the people who do the seminars so we may be able to open our options a bit and try for the best. A kit/replica manufacturer? A builder? An engine expert? Perhaps an expert on original Speedsters? Do you have any suggestions? Please post your ideas and I'll pass them along.

Mike also provided the following information:
- the giveaway car is "a beautiful, eggshell colored '63 VW Beetle" and "it is a very low mileage car" (but I don't believe it has a Raby engine!).
- details of the weekend (agenda and online registration) will most likely be posted on the website (www.carsatcarlisle.com) within the first 2 weeks of 2004.
- you may sign up for the email newsletter which will be the most current source of information about the show at any given time. It is often sent before the website is updated. The registration link is on the website.

Alan Merklin is working on reserving a block of hotel rooms for people who need lodging so we'll need to know who will need a room and for how many nights. Alan is also working out the details for a Saturday night dinner with a guset speaker, hosted by the New Jersey Replicar Club (www.njreplicar.org) which has several Speedster owners as members. In the next couple of days I will be sending out an e-mail to our 150-owner distribution list asking for your plans for rooms and dinner, we'll handle those discsssions via e-mail so please let me know either way.

Don't forget, I need your suggestions on seminars.

Speedsters at Carlisle - May 2004 !!!

In the past years, the cars have not been molested at any hotel that I am aware of.
This is the same Carlisle location that draws 10,000 (yes 10,000!)Corvettes into town in the month of August for Carlisle Productions Corvettes at Carlisle.
Wives will enjoy the friendship of a great group of women from the NJRC ..they always manage to have a fun time and look forward to the annual event!
Being a "local" in the area, my wife Kim and I attend a number of shows each season that are hosted @ Carlisle annually Corvettes,Chevy,Ford, are just a few a of the 10 events. The facilities are up to date, clean, grounds are huge beyond discription and can't be compared to any show type venues I have been at. To add, there is on site security (not really needed), on site medical assistance. The food court is very good with a good varity of food items available and reasonably priced! Even the restroom facilities have attendants that maintain them in a high standard. The Sunday car giveaway is always the highlight of the weekend as the huge crowd gathers in the stage grandstand and surrounding area for the lucky winner to be announced!

Let's all contact Bruce Stumpp early on to add YOUR name(s) to attend!

Alan
Jody:

Great! Are you staying over Friday and Saturday night? How about dinner Saturday evening? I'll e-mail a list of owners who are coming from your direction when I have more of the responses back so you can join or coordinate a caravan if you want.

The Meet is coming together real well, we have cars coming from as far away as Canada, upstate New York, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina and many surrounding states so it should be a great time. More details will be available soon. This is going to be big!

I have reserved a private banquet dining room for Speedsterowners.com (SOC)which will be joining the NJ Replicar Club group for dinner at "Sunnyside" in Carlisle Pa. on Saturday evening, May 22nd @ at 7:00 pm.
There is an extensive menu to choose from at Sunnyside with individual checks.

PLEASE NOTE.... email your Sunnyside dining reservations to me indicating you're with SOC including names as EARLY on as possible....
It has been indicated that, Sunnyside is going to be to filled to capacity on that evening. For the past three years, I've made the arrangments at Sunnyside as everyone that has dined at the Sunnyside has raved about the food, thus our annual return.

Easy to add seating early on, but may very well be difficult or impossible to add at last minute....please don't be left out !

RESERVE NOW by emailing me at: drclock@hotmail.com

Cut off date IS May 15th without exception .

We are now set for "Speedsters at Carlisle" with rooms blocked at the Ramada Ltd. and dining at Sunnyside .... possibly more is in the works and will advise accordingly!

Carlisle is a "must be there" event!

East Coast Bruce:

I hope to be leading the "New England Speedsters Caravan to Carlisle"

We'll be leaving the Providence, RI area around 9am on May 21'st and by that time I hope to get other folks from the New England Area to join us. I've contacted the local Oldies radio station (WWBB in Providence) and their Cruisin' GURU, "Crusin Bruce Palmer" (you Bruce's are everywhere) to help get the word out to both local Speedster owners, as well as any other kit car owners who wish to join us. Might even get some radio coverage of the caravan as we make our way Southwest to Carlisle. Another friend is a member of the Spyder club up here and will be contacting them on our behalf, and I'll also contact the folks at Type 356 New England (they're about half replica cars).

We hope to meet up with the folks from NY and NJ as we hurtle through and have them join up with us for the last stretch into Carlisle, with a Carlisle ETA of 5pm Friday at the Ramada. More precise directions and times as we get closer to May.

We'll have support services along the way, including tools, a trailer (just in case) some limited spares and some really talented wrench pullers. We'll also have the usual over-complement of cell phones, cameras and CB radios and such. If we do this right, maybe we can get the award for the "Largest Caravan to Carlisle" or something!

I'll be looking to you for a list of the signed-up folks up this way so we can contact them as we progress, and I'll keep the SOC informed of our progress.

I'm hoping that this might attract those folks who might like to go but are timid about "going it alone" and would welcome and join a much larger (and supportive) group to travel along with.

Next step is to come up with a knockout speedster logo for our hats!!

Rhode Island Gordon
Gordon,

I love it! You're really pulling things together from your end. You should be able to get a great caravan going especially if the Spyder and Type 356 New England clubs join in - tell those guys the originals are welcome too because Carlisle is an Kit/Replicar AND Import event. I'll be at Carlisle from Friday morning until Sunday afternoon but we should be at the hotel around 5:00 PM Friday watching for you guys to drive in - most likely we'll be standing in the parking lot BS'ing anyway. Don't forget to point everyone to our site for details SpeedstersEast.home.att.net I expect the Carlisle site to have details on registration in the next few days.

It looks like there will be caravans coming from the northwest (Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio), north (Canada, upstate New York) and you'll be pulling in the northeast (Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Delaware). We're still working on the southern folks but have interest so far from Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and possibly Tennessee. Of course the Pennsylvania guys are already there!
Hi folks!

I'm Gordon's son, and I've been lurking around here for a while when Dad emails me some of the more interesting topics here. We'll be taking my Dakota down towing Dad's 356 on the car trailer behind us. I'm planning on bringing a pretty full complement of tools/jacks/etc. in the back of the truck (I make a drive out to Ohio every year for the national Talon/Eclipse shootout, so a "small" trip down to Carlisle should be a piece of cake!) in case any of us in the New England caravan (or anyone else in Carlisle once we get there!) run into problems.

There are usually about 15-20 cars in the caravan when I go out to Ohio, and having a CB in as many cars as possible usually works out pretty well for us. Most of us wire the radio up to plug into a cigarette lighter, then hit up Radio Shack for a cheap antenna. It makes for a 30-second setup, and the banter on the CBs is usually priceless. :) So, if there are any other guys planning on doing something similar in terms of a caravan from other parts of the country, it might be something you want to talk about.

In any case, I can't wait to meet you all, and see all the cars I hear about so often. It's also going to be a welcome change towing Dad's Speedster instead of my 3200lb Eclipse! :)

Chris
Hi Chris,

Welcome to the group and thanks for helping out. If this trip doesn't convince you to buy a Speedster than you might be impressed by some of the other hardware on display both by manufacturers and private owners. Your Dad and you are doing a bang-up job of pulling together the northeast caravan and I'm looking forward to that parade pulling into town. After coordinating a smaller meet in Maryland last October I can tell you it's exciting to round the corner and see the cars driving in and lined up...we had 11 cars there but this meet will blow that one away. Looking forward to meeting you guys.
Today, I contacted the activities directors of both the NE Type 356 club and the Northeast Porsche club telling them of the Carlisle meet and of the Caravan we're running. The president of Type 356 responded quickly telling me that they'll post the Carlisle meet under their "Events" calendar - still waiting to hear from Steve Ross at the NE PCA (another friend). Also contacted Bruce LeDoux of the Spyder Owners group to get his help in the Boston area for other Spyder owners. I'll keep you all posted with any new caravaners.

I'm also working up a Spares list for anyone traveling any distance with their cars (Not just to these meets), and hope to get input from the rest of the group for a complete list.

all for now........Gordon
I will be travelling down from Quebec City. It would be cool to meet up with people on the way down. Maybe we can organize a schedule of places and with cell phone numbers we can call to make sure people are on time. Maybe, following the highway to Carlisle we can have some meeting stops. As we get closer we pick up more and more people at the same time staying on schedule.

I checked with mapquest, 700 miles from Quebec, 11 hours. I know though it is closer to 14 hours.
Mike: That's exactly what we're planning here in the Northeast - get the route planned in advance with specified stops along the way to pick up folks wishing to join us. Should be quite a herd by the time we all get to Carlisle!! Cell numbers, CB radio channels, specific stops along the way with arrival and departure times will all be published as we get closer to May.

Don't know if you would become part of our group (not sure about your route, and we'll be heading down the NE coast to NYC, then on along the Jersey shore toward Carlisle), but I'm sure there will be a number of people coming from different directions that you can hook up with somewhere. The idea is to get several caravans going from different directions so most everyone has company along the way.

So how about it you other folks!?!?!?! Let's get some volunteers from other parts of the country to lead caravans from their areas to the meet! It's safer and more fun in a group, you might attract a few more people to go who would otherwise not want to make the trip alone, and maybe you can leave Carlisle with a different group headed to warmer places! (just kidding).

Gordon
Mike -

Just a thought, but if you'd like to split up the trip some, we'd be more than happy to put you up for the night, and you could join the rest of the New England caravan for the remainder of the trip.

Also, for those of you near the New England caravan route who are on the fence about trying to decide whether or not you really want to drive that far, I'm sure that we'll have more than enough tools, hardware, and know-how to tackle any contingency that might occur. As Murphy's law goes, the more prepared you are, the less you'll need to be. Besides, seeing all of the gazes we're going to attract on the highway would be worth it!!

As for convincing me to build a speedster, Bruce... I actually have been kicking around the idea of building a kit car. I have a special place in my heart for Speedsters after working on Dad's with him now and then. However, my own car would have to be blue with two racing stripes, with a 427 under the hood (mounted in the front and not the rear!). :)
