The thing is, I've got one four cylinder car to play with already, and there isn't much that rivals the exhaust tone of a big throaty v8. While I do admit that there are a lot of Cobra replicas running around, they still turn a lot of heads, and after driving one last summer that only had a 351 in it, I'm totally convinced.

Don't get me wrong - I love Gordon's speedster. The thing is just a hoot to throw around in the twisties, and everywhere it goes, people are doing double takes. However, the Cobra I drove handled as good as, if not better than, the Speedster with acceleration that was on par with my Eclipse, which is kind of hard to match with a Speedster without adding a turbo (not the easiest route on a VW motor) or nitrous (eh, no thanks).

Besides, I sound enough like Dad as it is already - do I really need a car like his too? ;-)
More news going out: Got a posting on the Spyder Club inviting members to Knotts and Carlisle with us. Hope to hear from some of them soon - there's already been a bunch of people looking at the post and I'll keep poking to see if we have some joiners. Going to try to get onto the Events listing of the NE Porsche Club as well and we're already on the events of Type 356 in New England (they're cool!).

I'll be working out the route and expected stops with Chris this weekend and we'll get that posted next week so folks can start to plan ahead. Those of you in the "Great White North" (Mike Cochrane, are you listening?) or Maine, NH or Vermont who have a Long way to go are invited to stay overnight at either Chris' house in Grafton, Massachusetts or down here in Tiverton, Rhode Island with Kathy and me to break up your trip in both directions. Just let us know well ahead.

Gordon
Gordon & Chris,

Thanks for all your efforts getting the northeast caravan organized. It sounds like you have the planning well underway and the support truck will provide security to the folks joining the parade. Hopefully Mike Cochrane and others will be able to join you. You might want to contact the NJRC president and see if you can coordinate your schedules and directions.

I've asked someone to be the southern caravan coordinator and should know after the 15th if they can do it. Am now working on the northeastern coordinator and anxiously waiting for Carlisle to post their registration info.
Bruce and all......

Things are starting to look good in the Northeast for Carlisle! We already have commits from one in Vermont, one in NH, four Spyders in the Connecticut area and my Speedster from RI...The caravan and Carlisle will be talked about at the event planning meeting of the NE Type 356 club this week and I hope to get a few more from Mass. from that group. I would LOVE to get someone from Maine just to round out the NE states! We'll be picking up the CT folks as we pass through.

Who is the contact at the NJ Replica Club so I can start to coordinate with them?

Gordon
Gordon,
NJRC contact is Rocky Cimbrec at vze4yc68@ANTIVIRUSverizon.net
Some of the NJRC group head out to Carlisle on Friday and others on Saturday AM, meeting 8:00 AM at the Holiday Inn in Clinton, NJ just off the Rt 78 Clinton exit. I am traveling from Pa. to NJ. for their monthly meeting this Wednesday evening and will run this by them and try to get some idea as to the Speedster count. Alan M
Gordon,

Would appreciate if you could send the name and e-mail addresses of the owners you have who committed from Vermont, NH and the four Spyders in the Connecticut area. I'll add them to my distribution list so they get updated info as available.

Alan,

I was thinking about going to the NJRC meeting myself but wasn't up to the 3+ hour drive up and back. Work on those Speedseter owners while you're up there!
I use a motorcycle version of the talkabouts when I'm on my bike, but we can certainly grab a pair for the caravan. Although, I already have a CB in my truck, and I generally have better luck with them for events such as this. It gives us the added bonus of asking the truckers to make holes for us in traffic to keep the caravan together, and traffic updates should we run into anything along the way.

Besides - get a big enough antenna, and your speedster looks like a mini R/C car!!!
John Hallstrand's car (although just a body right now) and the juicy details are now posted in the Featured Cars section of the East Coast Speedsters Meet website: speedsterseast.home.att.net/features.htm

All you East Coasters, don't forget to register. Registration instructions are posted at: speedsterseast.home.att.net/register.htm
Do it today, it'll give you something to do while your're waiting for the snow and ice to melt! And don't forget to register your club as "Speedsterowners.com".

I though I would add some adventure into our Speedsters at Carlisle...

Following the joint Saturday evening dinner with the
New Jersey Replicar Club, there is a large indoor and outdoor go cart facility available one mile away that has three different tracks
One indoor oval, and two outdoor tracks: a LeMans style track and a "slick track" for us "Big Kids" We have done this in past years it's a blast even when the "track officals" ( aka HS kiddies) get testy at us "Big kids" and start yelling at us for being less than "professional" drivers!

Alan M.
Alan,

Great idea, the Saturday night racing should be alot of fun...especially with this group. Maybe we can team up against the Cobra guys! I'm building an agenda/schedule that will be available prior to and at Carlisle, it will include all the Carlisle activities, times and locations. We'll include your brief seminar on an alternative method of heating (mentioned on another thread) plus all the other Speedster-related goings-on.

East Coast guys,

If you have already registered with Carlisle and have not sent an e-mail to me please let me know so I can add your name to our list. 52 people have told me they are coming and 10 are "on the fence" but only 16 have registered so far. If you have not registered yet, please do....Carlisle will pitch a hospitality tent for us if we hit a certain number plus the earlier they see how many of us are coming the more they will know we are serious and get behind the Speedster Meet. Don't forget, registration instructions are posted here: speedsterseast.home.att.net/register.htm
Bruce -

I'll gladly put in a separate reservation for myself (even though I'm Gordon's passenger). Let me know, I'd be happy to help out if needed.

While we're on the subject of preparations, I've been hard at work the past few weeks ripping the rusty steel deck off of my car trailer and welding a new diamond plate deck on, changing around the frame a bit, and building a set of ramps that slide out from under the deck surfaces. It's been a great "Chris is teaching himself how to weld" project. The end result gives Gordon a trailer for his Speester to hang out on down to Carlisle and back. It also gives me a valid excuse to hang out in the garage every night, instead of just hiding there like normal. :)

Can't wait for the Carlisle weekend - it should be an awesome time!!
I made 5 footers, but my Eclipse is lower than Dad's speedster, and it didn't have any clearance problems with 5 foot ramps previously. Besides, given how light the speedster is, I suppose we could just pick it up and heave it on there. ;-)

The back of the trailer isn't all that high off the ground when there is any weight on the ramps, so it shouldn't be that big a deal, but thanks for the suggestion!
Speaking of trailers...

I just called U-haul and they want $50/day for their car trailers. I thought that was steep. Especially since they will whack me for an extra day for picking it up Thursday after work and a day for returning it Monday morning. $200!!! Ouch.

Any ideas? Other rental joints?

Jerome
Alan, or just keep it? These units are not terribly large and don't take up a great deal of space. I checked out the one Ken Smith, president of the Chicagoland Replicar Assn., had which he used to tow is Dutchess (sp?).....MG replica.....to events. It was pretty neat. Ken kept his stored in his yard as I recall.
I never was planning on driving the car. I didn't like the idea of getting caught in a rainstorm on the way to or from. 5 hours in the rain with the top up, no heat to de-fog the windows and little 10" wipers sounds like a recipe for a bad day. Besides I have this nice Dakota with the towing package and the 5.2 liter V8 (Insert Tim Allen grunting noises here). I wanted to be able to bring tools and stuff for the Midwest Caravan also. Besides I can't fit a beer cooler, snacks, and a clothes bag behind my seats.

I have one buddy that has a nice trailer, but it's a real battleship. He tows large farm tractors with it and just the trailer weighs more than my Speedster. Fine for short trips not real efficent for 5 hours.

I don't like the idea of the dolly because I would like to have the car covered for the trip. I gotta think dolling a car would be prone to debris kicking up and hitting the car (mostly stones, beercans and small rodents :) )

I did a google search and U-Haul was the only one I found.

Jerome

BTW: Today I turn 30 years old. Does that mean I am officially "Old enough to know better". I think I have 10 more years for "Over the Hill" and another 10 for "Older than Dirt".
Somthing that I always have thought about using a 2 wheel dolly (long distance tow) is the rear wheels are always turning, trans is active. I never have been able to get a real good answer about any stress on the trans having the rear wheels turning the trans. The best answer from a VW AC group was to remove the shaft at wheel CV joint to stop the trans from working. Any comments from this group? Besides drive it!
C U at Carlisle!
