Jerome,
I have used Uhaul to transport cars from the dock in S Cal to me. Since they are out of country autos that have no reg, all 4 wheels have to be off the ground. Uhaul is the only company I could find with the full auto-transporter, and I spent several days trying.
Another company told me straight out that Uhaul was the only one. But, I would still try the mom and pop rental places in your area.
Of course another option is to buy a used dolly. I see them running 3-400$ regularly in the paper or on ebay. Then add a rock guard to the front. The rock guards I have seen are just canvas pulled over a steel frame. You could weld one together easily. But then you have to store it.
-=theron
A seventeen footer works well. Just tell them you're "moving". While I was waiting for the prev. owner to arrive I read my rental agreement which forbade hauling vehicles or livestock. Stupid fine print! Found a wall just right to load it in Rhode Island but unloaded the easy way at home.

I used a Ryder 14' box van to haul a speedster and it worked out well!
They are low to the ground as is the U Haul trucks just find an embankment , another thought is many lumber yards ( the real lumber yards) have an outside loading "dock" that has a ramp to the ground.
Towing a Speedster on a two wheeled dolly is fine.
In neutral, a standard trans is free wheeling as it would be if coasting. There no concerns regarding lubrication of the transmission or the CV joints as the grease is sealed within the CV boot.
However , with an automatic trans it will heat up and destroy itself while being towed

Jerome,
How about auto body shops or builders in your area? Maybe check with one of the streetrod clubs in your area. If they have a trailer that is not in use they may be willing to let you use it for a few bucks a day.
We want to get your car to Carlisle but I am really concerned about the beer, coolers and snacks :>)
Happy birthday !!

Warning about towing a car.
The bearings are not made to be pulled for long. My beetle acquired a loud noise after towing it to Cali from Massachusetts. It had no affect on the tranny(68 swing axle) other than a loud bearing noise.

Which bearing ? Could it have been fate, as in that bearing was gonna go 3K miles down the road, driven or towed ?
I too am leery of towing long distances........

Bryant,
You're probably right. This may only occur with a tranny that is well used. I just feel that the tranny breaks in pushing forward then the forces are on the oposite side of the bearings?!

Be careful about covering a car and towing it . No matter how well you secure a cover it will whip at the cars finish going down the highways .
Bearings are bearings as klong as the are in good condition and are lubricated with grease, towing isn't going to hurt anything...Hell I been "towing" 45' and 53' trailers for 31 years and can't recall an axle /wheelbearing failure.

One more name added to the list of Speedster owners REGISTERED for the Carlisle meet! (See list above) Welcome, Bruce Ryan from Ohio! I met Bruce at a previous Carlisle Import-Kit/Replicar Nationals and he owns a beautiful red Speedster with some personal touches.
Okay guys, time to get motivated. We need 6 more registrations to hit 25 before the approaching deadline. If you're coming to Carlisle head into the Speedsters East website and follow the easy instructions...it only takes a few minutes.

Well, when it rains it pours. Carlisle just confirmed we have two more registrations that I wasn't aware of - Carey Hines from Ohio and Greg Phelps from Florida. Greg is bringing his Speedster north on the Auto Train!
That's 21 registered ... 4 more needed to qualify. Keep 'em coming!

One more registration added for Carlisle ... Welcome Glenn Noble of Maryland. Glenn was voted "best paint" at the Mt Airy winery tour last October so don't forget to stop by and take a look.
Okay guys, that's 21 - we need FOUR more registrations to qualify! Keep 'em coming!

Come on guys and gals, we only need 3 more to qualify and then the remaining 35 can register at their leisure.

Maybe this has been asked/answered, but do we register the car or the occupants? If wives are accompanying us, do they need to register? I imagine passengers don't (i.e. cars are registered, not people), but just curious.
That could boost the numbers.

Bob,
No need to register your right-seaters - wives or otherwise. All you need to do is register your car on-line or by mail and Carlisle will send you a confirmation postcard (note: it's helpful to have this postcard with you but not necessary). When you arrive at Carlisle, go to the registration area just outside the participants entry gate. They will give you a sticker for your windshield and a goody bag (and a dash plaque if you're among the early entries) - then you drive in the gate and they'll direct you to our area of the meeting field.
BTW, just inside the entry gate about fifty yards on the left they provide a washdown area with about 10-15 running hoses if you want to clean off the bugs and road dust. We'll provide more details as it gets closer to May but ask questions if you have them.

Bruce, if it rains (the pox on me, the pox on me) and I mean REALLY rains, will the field turn into a mug bog? This will be my first trip to the fairgrounds, so I'm not sure what to expect.
Thanks :-)

John,
I've driven to Carlisle on a couple of rainy weekends and don't recall problems with mud. The access roads and roads within the show area have been paved and the grassy areas where the participant cars congregate are hard packed. Shouldn't be a problem...beside, it's not going to rain!

Number 23 just notified me of his registration - Ted Hatem. I don't have a location for him yet but hope to hear more soon.
Who's going to be the 24th and 25th charter registrations? We need two more and we'll be ready to rock one month in advance of the deadline!!

Karl Macklin of Maryland is charter registration #24! That puts us ONE registration away from our end-of-March goal of 25. So who is it going to be? Register today! For registration instructions see: SpeedstersEast.home.att.net/register.htm
BTW, over 50 people have made reservations for the Saturday night dinner hosted by the NJRC (New Jersey Replicar Club). The guest speaker is Mike Blake, editor of Kit Car magazine. So far, 37 of the 50+ are Speedster folks. Right-seaters are welcome and need a reservation too! Everyone will be ordering from the menu and paying their own tab. If you are interested in joining us, don't delay making reservations as we will be limited in space and last-minute add-ons will be tough, if not impossible. Contact Alan Merklin (drclock@hotmail.com) for reservations. For more details see: SpeedstersEast.home.att.net/latest.htm

WE DID IT!! 25 Speedster owners are now registered for Carlisle!! Welcome Tom Buchanan from West Virginia, he helped us close the deal. That meets our end-of-March goal for registrations - one month in advance of the deadline - and lets us take advantage of Carlisle's tent offer. When you arrive at Carlisle watch for all the Speedsters and the Speedsterowners.com/SpeedstersEast hospitality tent. It's going to be a beautiful sight to see more Speedsters than Cobras parked on the field.
Keep those registrations coming, if you haven't registered yet, instructions can be found here: SpeedstersEast.home.att.net/register.htm
With this goal met, watch for two announcements in the next few days -embroidered Speedster event hats will go on sale soon and we're going to invite the Spyder owners to join us!
See you at Carlisle!!!

Just received another official registration - Doug Andrews coming from Springville, New York. I met Doug and his Speedster at the Watkins Glen vintage races last fall. An earlier e-mail from him said he was considering installing the 2.8 L Autocraft motor from his open class Chenwith buggie. We'll see.
Still a bunch of lurkers out there who haven't registered yet. Come on guys, join the list!

I finally was able to speak with Lori from the Carlisle Ramada Inn (group sales rep).
There was some major confusion at the main group sales center in Colorado as to he rooms available for SpeedsterOwners.com group .
If you have recently called the group sales 800 number, you have received invalid information.
As of today there ARE seven(7)rooms still remaining in the reserved block until the block expires on April 21st...... thirty days prior to the Carlisle event.
To make your reservation call Lori direct at the Carlisle Ramada at (717) 243-8585
Be sure to ALSO email me at drclock@hotmail.com for dinner reservations !

Registration number 27 is added to the list - Tony Carrer. I don't have a location for Tony but a Google search says his Pale Peach-colored '57 Speedster replica won 1st place in the Kit Car class at Super Jam 14 (2001) & 15 (2002) in Mohnton, Pa. Welcome Tony! BTW, seven Speedster owners are also registered from the NJRC for a total of 34 so far! Register today, the more the merrier!
Bruce, do you know if the SOC and the NJRC will be located close together? I realize that NJ owners own cars besides Speedsters, but it would sure be nice if the Speedster component would be close at hand.
John,
Yes, NJRC and us are working with Carlisle to assure both groups are side-by-side on the fun/show field. Should be a great time.
BTW, we haven't talked much about food. Carlisle has quite a few places serving breakfast and lunch under the grandstand each day. The prices, food and variety are reasonably good and there are alot of undercover picnic tables. This is much better than the carnival trailers typically found at these types of events.

Let me tell you about food.....As Bruce mentioned, the Carlisle show has their food court vendors located on the rear side of the grandstands , all which are very good!
The best bang for the buck is the huge breakfast sandwiches sold by the only non profit group there, the Carlisle High School Marching Band...our annual breakfast tradition that I look forward to!

Okay, guys and gals....Spring is only days away and it's time to register for the East Coast National Speedster Meet in Carlisle, Pa. Whey should you register now rather than later? At least two reasons:
First, if we get 25 registrations before April 25th Carlisle will erect our very own hospitility tent for all three days dedicated to the Speedster group and best of all....for free!
Second: The Carlisle folks are well aware of our planned event and are rolling out the red carpet for us with perks (such as Speedster-specific seminars) not given to other groups. BUT if they see low registrations and it LOOKS like we will have a low turnout (because many of us are waiting until "later" to register) then they just may decide to put their eggs in another basket - like give them to the Cobra groups! YUKKKKK!
Registering is easy and it only costs $15 for you, a passenger and your car for all three days. Just follow the simple instructions posted here: speedsterseast.home.att.net/register.htm
Register today!!!
