Assuming the car really IS a 62K mi numbers matching original (with perfect 45 year old glossy original paint), I would think the guy would market the car where people could actually INSPECT it before spending more than I did for my house? He's from from southern CA, for crying out loud- there isn't any lack of high end classic car dealers that would LOVE to sell the car for him. It's not like he's from the midwest, with no other options than ebay. From the buyer's perspective, I cannot imagine (and I'm a pretty trusting guy).
I do a lot of "used car surfing" on the internet and I've seen more than a few Ebay cars listed other places as well, like AutoTrader.com, CarsDirect.com, CollectorCarTrader.com, etc.
And I've done the same thing - putting a car up for auction just to see what you might get (setting the reserve at your "asking price") - and listing the car For Sale at the more traditional internet locations, plus the local newspaper. I've actually sold my last two cars on the internet (both via AutoTrader.com).

That seems reasonable. In this part of the world, the market for "special cars" is pretty slim... If you have any hope of selling, it has to be through an internet based channel. I've always envied you west coast guys' ability to see a variety of intersting cars "up close and personal". I guess I thought if this guy had what he says he had, he would be persuing other avenues. I never considered that maybe he was. At any rate- I wish I could see what a $70K+ original speedster looks like up close.
