But it's that wonderful long version! The PERRY or something like that. I just LOVE that style. Imagine how sweet it would look with a Karmann Ghia roof grafted on. Rear side windows filled with louvered aluminum panels. LeMans style flip-filler cap bolted to the rear most corner of the side window louvered plate with the filler line running to a second "long distance" tank in the bulkhead in front of the engine, Wide fives, no caps, hood straps and pins, lower front ground effects from the early Alfa coupe, padded aluminum windshield tabs and rear window straps, rear roof vent with double fiberglass roof bubbles, maybe a GM V6 or Suby in the rear with an aluminum radiator in the bulkhead between the engine and interior compartment, big side body inlets to feed it cold air and lots of aluminum outer trim and screening riveted where necessary .

Like a long distance, extended wheel base, endurance car. A predecessor to the long-tail 917 derivatives.

Maybe . . . ? If it were a tenth the price? Good starting point at least?

Oh, come on . . . . throw me something . . . . anything . . . .
Suppose, just suppose, that the original 550 Spyder had been built on a regular VW pan, just as the Perry (or Glockler for that matter) Spyders are. Let's imagine that all the famous photos we carry in our memories, like the ones of J.D. himself, were taken with the car in this configuration.

Enter some upstart with a new idea, a shortened Spyder. Imagine that. How would we react to that, since this would now be the car that doesn't look quite right? For my part, at least, sometimes what looks "right" has a lot to do with what I'm used to seeing.

Take a look at this pic:

Especially the rear quarter, then check out the silhouette of the extended Spyder. I swear, extend the lower nose area, a roof from a Ghia, and you're almost there!

Maybe not perfect, but sweet enough to get you into the factory prototype area.

A rear deck lid from a Fiat 600, a little fussing about and we're talkin Porsche Abarth baby ! ! ! !

Dang, Gerry. Too many purple diamonds in the Lucky Charms, or what?
It's not like it's an old Ferrari. It's got good lines to it, even if you could slice up enough Romano in one pass to cover that Italian-influenced not-rod with even more cheese ...
Oh, wait. We're in agreement -- if you're talking about the Abarth car.

Cheap shot, TC. Couldn't resist. Hadda get one in while you were on dope. I still remember the "kids' quarter ride outside of K-Mart" comment about my Gulf paint proposal ...

Long and sans doors, build up a partial tube chassis and it seems like it would make a very cool VW powered Funny Car for the Nostalgia Drags; I just don't see it as a replica of the car pictured below.

Okay, I'll be honest. I like anything that was made by a design team with an idea toward smooth -- especially when the car ends up being curvy.
Minimal chrome and recessed, covered headlights are a plus. Chrome shouldn't exceed about five percent of the car's total surface area, even if it was made in Detroit. Three to five percent is okay.
Anything made with a plastic interior -- from the factory -- should be shown the dumpster.
My nickel. :)
