Hello David.

It's a well know problem and discussed many many times here. Kirk will replace it if it's under warranty, but don't expect the new one to last long. He replaced mine 5 times and when it was finally out of warranty I just sent it in to North Hollwood Speedometer for repair. Since then, I have replaced 7 or 8 more of them in the different Speedsters I 've sold, but I use Palo Alto Speedometer now instead of North Hollywood. They are cheaper and do the same work. They replace the electronics with genuine VDO electronics and your problem is solved forever. Here is just one of the many threads about "twitchy" tachs.

I have been researching this issue a little further, it would appear as though if you put a diode inline (as per most of the electronic ignition manufacturers) between the coil and the Tach that this may eliminate the issues of bounce tach and perhaps even the failure issues.. does anyone know what NHSpeedo, or Palo Alto actually does when they fix these units. I understand that they replace the guts with VDO parts, but does VDO put a diode in the Tach itself?? is that the difference??
The diode fix doesn't work for the Vintage Chinese tachs, I've tried it on several tachs.

What NH and PA Speedometer do is replace the cheap Chinese electronics with good VDO electronics and that is why it works. I have never heard anyone complain that they had a problem with a NH or PA Speedometer fixed tach.

You're wasting your time trying to figure out what is wrong with the Chinese electronics. If it was an easy fix, Kirk would have already figured it out long ago. He has literally spent thousands of dollars replacing these bad tachs (5 for me alone) and as far as I know, the Chinese tachs are still crap.
