I have been doing research on this and it appears that the speedster is too small a car to make it practical. You could technically make it electric but it wont go very far to make good use of it. Its already a small car and it takes allot of batteries and space to make a practical electric car.

They do have a kit for the 914 Porsche though but the batteries in the 914 take up the front and the back and since the 914 is taller and can fit more batteries it kind of works.

I also looked into Hybrids but the cost of the batteries and electronics outweigh the benefits. (I read somewhere that it will cost more then $100,000 IF you could make it work since you dont have the buying power that Toyota or GM has)

After looking into this I think I will wait a few years until either hydrogen fuel or battery technology gets more practical and better.

Here is more info for you:

I would love to in a few years be able to say that I have built an electric speedster. But I guess that is just a dream.

There are many other small light cars that has been transformed into electric. You have the Ariel Atom, Lotus Elise and the T-rex (MC or car I don't know). I don't think the Tesla is a converted car.

My point being that you should be able to build an electric 356 even if it gets a short range. The key is that you need to have a light car.

Thats what I said, it is possible to make an electric 356 but the distance will be limited. Unless you have those kind of "Energy Storage System (ESS) batteries" http://www.teslamotors.com/engineering/how_it_works.php

that the Telsa has. Which I dont think you can get, even if you could I do not think it would be cheap.

Maybe in a few years technology will catch up. There are still things like Hydrogen (honda is already making a car for it) and better batteries being developed out there.

To see more on electrics, You May also want to visit AC Propulsons web site and the T-Zero concept , The technoligy is advancing but I still have reservations.

The Tesla is a Alternating Current car. AC gives you more exceleraion and greater range,

The DC cars are more with in a economical price range to build and are much more practial to mantain . Most people like to use them as a to work and home car and the their range genrialy works for those conditons. but you still have to plug um in daily.

Where as a a ACP type car could be used on longer trips. Im looking for advances in charging that use on car solar pannels like a camper shell would offer to a small truck or a redesigned roof line on a car that ecepts pannels.
I wonder if the electric car enthusiasts of today aren't in the same place that the hot rod enthusiasts were in the late 40s and all the 50s? Considering where the aftermarket performance parts industry is today, this could speak well for the future of electric cars. Make mine a plug-in please.
