The Hustler is almost ready to be put on the ground. All the brake hoses, wheel cylinders.

master cyl. and anything else that needed attention. All the metal lines are copper, and

have survived the 35 years in the barn. Once it is on the ground, I can check all the wiring,

put the motor in it, and try to start it. I have 2 more things to finish, and it will be ready to

go. The first thing are rebuilding the carbs, the second is the fuel pump. I'm not comfortable

rebuilding the pump myself. If I put an electric pump in it, I have to find a way of running

the gas through the old pump, it's not like a VW where you can put a plate over the opening. Is there a

reputable rebuilder out there?

One thing I forgot to mention, I think the car has only 9500 miles on it.

I talked to Nick, Sams brother, who was the main driver of the car. He only

drove around town, and on a lot of unpaved roads. I kind of believe it, the

brake shoes were in pretty good condition, and looked like they were never

changed. It looks pretty dirty, messy for a car with that kind of mileage.

Who knows, a lot can happen when a young brother a race driver gets

his hands on a Hustler.

The only worry, I tried to rebuild a pump for a 912 motor and I couldn't get

it to stop leaking. Turns out, someone over tightened the screws, and

distorted the mating surfaces. To fix it, it needed to be milled. After that,

I became a little gun shy of old fuel pumps. It seems this pump has never

been abused, so I guess I'll give it a try.

I got a kit from Stoddard a while back. After I finished 1 carb, and hopefully

will finish the other next week. My physical therapist gave me a bit of a

stern talk, advising me to stop doing the exercises so aggressively. I thought

I was speeding up my recovery, but I did the opposite. So I'm having a little

trouble trying to hold the carb down with one hand. This shoulder is keeping

me away from finishing the Hustler.
