BOTH the fuel sender and the tach are ground actuated. That means that there is +12V DC applied to the gauge all the time, and the "signal" that drives the gauge is a ground signal - through the sender to ground for fuel, and through the distributor to ground for the tach.

I suspect the opposite - there is a +12V feed up under the dash which is common to BOTH the tach and fuel gauges and it has come loose and is now intermitent.

The fix is the same, though......get up under the dash, find where +12V feeds the tach and the fuel gauge and follow it back through it's various connections to make sure they're all tight. I bet you'll find that the feed is common to both somewhere.
