So I started to install the petronix ignitor today but this very simple 30 minute job and 8 hours later and I want kick my car in anger, but then I would have to fix that too.

So here is what I did.

1. Disconnected battery
2. Removed cap, rotor, and condenser
3. Removed distributor (for easy of installation)
4. Installed the bottom part of the ignitor
5. Put the grommet on installed distributor
6. Replaced rotor and cap to find that it does not fit.

The stupid black grommmet thing doesn't go down far enough. I looked and it and moved it around and went down as far it could go. I was so mad I thought I bought the wrong one. I checked my distributor, 009 and saw that I ordered 1847A. I checked the Petronix site and it says that this goes on all aftermarket 009 050.

To be sure I go out to buy another one but I couldn't find one so I ended up getting a compufire. I put that on the stupid rotor didn't go down far enough either. I am using the Bosch cap and rotor.

I am wits end. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hit the Pertronix site and contact them. There's a big controversy going on regarding this problem. The aftermarket 009's are a different size than the previous ones, much larger shaft. Those part numbers listed only apply to genuine older German-Made 009's from like ten years ago.

A lot of the performance forums have threads going covering this same thing.

Pertronix will make things right.

If you really think that you have the right distributor and Pertronix kit and have a old rotor, you can cut the top portion away from the rotor and use that to drive the collar in place. Anything else, a socket, a pipe, etc. is too strong and will shatter the collar.

Luck!
The 1st upgrade I made on my car was the compufire set-up. AS I recall, my rotor would not go down as easily as I thought it should, so I called the shop I bought it from. The guys at Sacramento Bugformance talked me thru the problem.
It seems to me that I ended up just using a lil' more force than I thought was prudent to get it to seat. After that, it worked fine.
My advice Lazy8: call the people you got it from. They sold it, they should stand behind it.
I had the same problem with the "stupid black grommet thingy" that would not go down far enough also when I installed the Pertronix I on my VS. Following the late George Brown's instructions (he posted the procedures for a Compufire system....KNOWLEDGE SECTION), I used a deep well socket and a few light taps with a mallet to seat the grommet. Presto. I think before I tried this little trick my frustration level was nearly as high as yours is.

Thanks Larry i will do the timing when I get the car started.

Its amazing what some time off and some sleep will do for you. The CompuFire fit with a little more elbow grease. I guess I was too mad to stay focused.

That is the good news. The bad news is, the car won't start now. I did adjust the valves so I tomorrow I will recheck them and the go over the installation again.
