The Empi 34 carb set are absolute junk. I have messed with these things for more hours than I can imagine. The internal passages are not bored correctly, the mixture screws are not the same length when lightly seated, idle screw support brackets were bent incorrectly, I reset the floats, did the balance tube thing and they still ran like crap. At idle the manifold vacuum pulls the fuel at idle to # 2 and 4 cylinders and #1 and 3 are fuel starved so there is no way to adjust the carbs. This is a fresh balanced engine and I already changed out the fouled plugs caused by Empi crud ( I'm being polite) So realizing the agony of defeat, this afternoon I ordered two new WEBER 34 ICT's ………. Not sure if they will get here in time to install and run for Carlisle.

Well I totally understand what your going through. I just finished chasing a rabbit for one whole driving season and then some as I felt my tires were still good, and I finally just bit the bullet and bought a complete new set of tires and it completely solved my issue. I nearly paid the tires twice go figure...
Ray;
I turn 70, next month. I can not count how many times in my lifetime, I have cheapened out and bought under powered cars.
Quite a few at 70 years of age. That's been a big bullet to bite. No diff than tires.
Cheers,
Art
When I first bought my project, a few VW folk told me to only buy Empi if I had to.
Webers are on their way but the eBay seller listed the shipping place as Tennessee, Checked this AM shipped out of California with a ETA of Monday and now it's Tuesday . We have plans to leave for Carlisle Wednesday Am however, UPS doesn't roll into my neighborhood until early evening. Will inquire today if I can get UPS to hold them at the in town facility for pick up …... Rant complete.
Alan, I am about to start my Weber install today on my new engine. The engine is not in the car yet. I hope to get them bolted and well sealed at the head and top of manifold. This project has been driving me up the wall! Anyway, good luck with your Webers! See you next week, most likely on my bike or my daily driver.... ugh!
Alan - If you have a neighbor that you trust have UPS deliver to him and have him overnight it to the hotel. It'll cost you, but you'd have the carbs.
i think U have to have the carbs OFF to get them into the engine bay,at least thats what I remember from last engine install.??
Just found out my wife's friend's granddaughter is a local UPS driver, I will check later to day to see if she can grab the carbs before they travels the countryside . This way I'll have Tuesday to install and set them up. I will tow bar the speedster behind my trusty F 150 to the hotel so that will allow for any extra time if needed.
@BARNCOBOB The Webers can sat on the engine to install has about 1.5 inch on either side.
Alan, I've had those carbs for about 3 years now and I've been pretty happy with them. I also used their filter and hex bar systems which work well, but I had to tap and rethread some castings etc. Haven't touched them in 2 years.
I probably jinxed myself....
@barncobob, Yes, I think so too. Carbs off but exhaust can stay on. I just want to be sure I have as leak free a fit as possible before I have to climb into that little engine compartment. The final install will be with motor in the car... I have plenty to do prior to engine in car... like putting the new tranny in! ;-)
A very nice woman at the UPS terminal said just bang on the locked office door 9AM on Tuesday to get the the Weber carbs so that makes things easy.
I had to do something with my engine I pulled from my Beck so I put it in my freshly painted Ghia. It ran fine for a while, but maybe it didn't like being in something other than a Speedster and it began skipping a little. I pulled into a parking lot to see if I could adjust out the "skip" and noticed -people pointing at my car, presumably admiring my paint job, but alas, it was my rear engine barbecue pit. So I grabbed my fire extinguisher and coated the rear of my car with the contents of my extinguisher ("never leave home without it") The Ghia is in the body shop and am now searching for a 44 to put on my pepper mill when I get my car back.
Bingo it's healed and runs great ! I decided not to sit on my hands waiting on the Weber carbs to arrive last minute.... I once again disassembled the offending carb this time finding the slightest burr on the float pin . ( I had missed this twice) The float would not hang up to the touch but when I set the float in water it would not move, a light touch of sand paper then reassembled and it fired off on .....all four, I set the mixture screws and went for a short ride all is good !
Brilliantly done
That......is Amazing. Never would-a thought of that.
Glad you found it. I would prob'ly still be looking.
