I spoke with Art Thraen about the Empi carbs this past week. Out of the box there are several problems, but once properly set-up, he feels they are really good carbs. He is doing a "signature edition" of a few hundred carbs that he will be "fixing", boxing, and signing for Empi. If anyone can make them work, Art can...

He is also working on helping them correct some of the issues from the start.

The Spanish Webers are becoming harder and harder to find, and the US ones have their own set of initial problems...
The EMPI carbs are horrible!!!! You'll spend more $ on the carbs and fixing them than buying Genuine Webers in the first place! One guy I know wore out the throttle shaft holes in 150 miles, and then when he asked EMPI if he could BUY a new carb body, he was told "no, but we'll give you a good deal on a whole carburetor". WTF??? Nice customer service! They don't carry spare parts for the carbs they make, but are more than happy to sell you another carb! Nice racquet....

I'm considering making my own carburetor that is IDF compatible to end this quality control rubbish once and for all. If I do it they will be available within a year. Superior to Weber/EMPI in every respect, and externally the same as the IDF, so your exiting linkage/intakes/filters will fit.

I was merely relating what Art told me about the carbs. I've personally had mixed results from them, granted we rarely see them, but the little experience I have with them is mixed... This is actually what sparked the conversation with Art about them.

Anyway, thanks for the update John. Please keep us posted on your progress with your own carb. Not many other alternatives out there, so I know that I'll be looking forward to hearing more.
