I replaced my shift rod bushing and coupler a few weeks back and happened upon a problem with my EMPI shifter I wanted to pass along. It's a good (cheap) shifter that I'm happy with, but isn't the best built.
When reinstalling the shifter, I noticed that the flat nylon pieces that make up the body of the shifter housing were rocking and separating when moving the shifter back and forth in neutral.
Turns out the shifter is held together with 4 rivets, two of which broke on mine
I replaced the rivets with screws, nuts and red loc-tite. I think I used 10/32 screws.
If you have this shifter, you can lift up the boot and check if yours are giving out too.
The offending rivets are denoted in RED in the diagram below:
Note this shifter says "Hurst" but the EMPI is the same.
