If using mono grade it would be 30W or 40W (VW manual recommends 40w for "tropical" temperatures). If using multi grade a 10W-40 or 15W-40 is appropriate.
For the past 40 years, I've used and recommended Castrol 20-50 with great success.

I'm in SoCal (Orange Co.) and I've always used 20-50w. My car is a daily commuter/driver and haven't had an issue. For reference, I have a basic set-up; 1835cc, dual Kadrons, external oil-cooler, 3:88 tranny.

Bob, As Jim has pointed out, 20-50 is applicable in Southern Calif. year round.
Ditto 20W-50 in Southern CA. Freeway driving, if nothing else, gets those temps up, and it can be over 100F ambient even in December when the Santa Ana winds start to blow. Besides, heavier oil grades won't leak out the bottom as fast (UH . . .is that a good reason or not?).
