I am a newbie lurker and seeker trying to find a way to legally afford a 356 and stay married with only forty years of bliss to date. Confused about engine choices. Born with very modest mechanical ability, so I don't want to do much maintenance myself. Don't want to be fleeced either. I want to have more than a 16k cc engine in my first car, but don't want to do the 3K valve adjustments myself. To avoid this chore, I need suggestions to see if the BugStuff 1776 engine with chrome moly is my only choice. Recommendations on reliable and more hefty engines without the valve adjustments would be met with gratitude. Steve

Hydraulic lifters are what obviate the need for valve adjustments, not chrome moly push-rods.
I'd suggest a Subaru.
BugStuff in W. Brownsville, PA builds a solid reliable motor....they do it right. I've bought parts from Jack for 25 years, he has built me 10 motors to date and is very reasonable price wise. He is currently building me a 1915 and a swing axle trans. The 1776 is reliable and does not require and additional external cooler. Chrome molly push rods for the most part will eliminate the need to adjust valves. with the correct tire size and tans R &P you're good. For a small additional amount you can bump up to a 1915 this motor is the maximum cc that you can use the stock oil cooler. You will get many suggestions herein but this is my standard menu...... Case savers, full flow for external oil filter, new heads, 1:25 rockers chrome moly push rods, quality jugs, piston set and oil pump, counter balanced crank, Engel 110 cam, teflon buttons.
Like Alan, I've bought parts from Bug Stuff for a while, now. Jack used to have a booth at the Carlisle Kit Car show for years - don't know of he still does or not (kit cars there are fewer each year), but his website is good. Jack's a straight shooter - I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him.
What Stan said. You're still adjusting valves with chromoly pushrods. They are NOT set 'em and leave 'em.
