What is the best way to attach the cable to the latch for the engine compartment lid?
It seems like there might be some way neater than pushing the cable through the hole and twisting it.

Michael - you might consider using a barrel-clamp (I think that's what they're called). It's similar to what has been used on the end of a throttle cable (at VW engine) or heater cables (at VW heater boxes). I'm not sure if what I just wrote makes sense, but I think you get the gist! Good Luck with the project. Will we finally get to see your Speedy this year at Carlisle?
They have the barrel clips at Lowes in the fastener draws Or you can buy a choke cable kit or a hood release repair kit and the clip is in it.. at your local automotive store..

I have some barrel clamps. They only have a hole for one wire to go through.
I thought I would want something with a place for two wires. I would loop the wire through and grab both the incoming and outgoing parts of the cable - like grabbing both legs of a U with the latch at the bend.

One new development is that I will be out of the country for 24 days right before Carlisle. That is part of why time seems short now.

go to home depot and grab a package of the small wire rope clamps. they come in packages of two and look like they are made of lead (although probably not).
they are used everywhere, but mainly on things like gym equipment. they come small enough to fit that tiny cable. i used two used side cutters to "clamp" them on. worked like a charm.

Ah so that's what you wanted. I'd still go to Lowes But instead get aluminum cable crimp sleeves .
See McMaster-Carr catalog pg. 1404 for stop sleeves; page ahead to 1406 for "Strong-Grip End Fittings
I think I want something like the oval sleeve on 1404.

Ive used 10mm copper pipe ,just cut a 5mm piece ,loop the cable through & crimp
You can do the same thing with a scrap peace of steel fuel line.. And I have used vw brake line scraps to make new thottle cable end on dune buggies.. The trick works..
