Hello all, had some questions regarding the engine compartment on my CMC. 1) what exactly is this "hump"? I'm guessing a cutout for the starter? Does it have to be cut out or will everything fit with no modification? 2) the panels that come with the kit... Are these necessary?  3) Does the bay have to be sealed for cooling like vw's? Back to the previous question, possibly just the bottom piece is needed?  4) What have you all used to line the bay (and wheel wells)? I was thinking of just brushing on some raptor bedliner. Thanks for the input!20240316_212629

The CMC build manual has you cutting out that 1/2 moon which is in front of the cooling fan.  You are a contributing member so you can access the build manual here.

The other fiberglass trim pieces seal out hot exhaust gases and allow only cool air to enter in front of the engine. They are needed if you are going air cooled.  Not needed for say a Subaru engine conversion.

EMPI makes stainless steel bug engine compartment liner.  Others have used sheet aluminum tediously cut to size and fitted (looks much better).

@JoeyLegos     You got questions?  We've got answers.

In addition to what Greg has offered,

1) what exactly is this "hump"? I'm guessing a cutout for the starter? Does it have to be cut out or will everything fit with no modification?

Most of us believe that removing that half-moon piece aids in cooling the engine since, as Greg states, it's right in front of the cooling fan.  I removed that on mine, too.  If it's still in there the engine will fit OK, but it's better to remove it.  Leave the edge as a frame - It will help direct the air towards the fan inlet.  I believe that Vintage removes that piece as well, but a Vintage owner should confirm that.

2) The panels that come with the kit... Are these necessary?

Yes.  You really want to isolate the hot air off of the exhaust pipes from the cool air above the heads and engine tin feeding the cooling fan and carbs.  CMC included several FG pieces to do this.  I also made my shields out of HVAC sheet metal and have a set of installation instructions that I'll send over in a PM that might help visualize them.   There should also be a couple of FG panels that are inner wheel well walls in the front.  You should glass those in eventually, too.

3) Does the bay have to be sealed for cooling like vw's? Back to the previous question, possibly just the bottom piece is needed?

The bay must be mostly sealed.  I got a large piece of shop floor fatigue mat (Home Depot flooring dept.)  and cut it to just fit the firewall and extended it down to overlap the tin on the flywheel end of the engine.  It's held in with HD contact cement and under hood blanket mushroom fasteners.  It looks great (it's black) and it deadens the engine noise a bit, too.  It extends down a couple of inches, overlapping the flywheel end engine breast plate and I attach the forward edge of the horizontal engine shields to it with angle brackets.  It isn't 100% sealed, but whatever comes in is cool air.

4) What have you all used to line the bay (and wheel wells)? I was thinking of just brushing on some raptor bedliner.

Yup, use some bedliner.  Hurculiner, Raptor, whatever.  Some roll on, some spray on.  I used the spray on, YMMV.  I found it interesting that on my CMC, it looks like there was bedliner sprayed into the frunk (front trunk) and then gel-coated over it.  When I had to do some holes in it I found that the uneven-ness must have been in the mold to give the frunk floor and sides some texture.  Interesting, but that's about all...   😉
