engine cover release

Hi Folks,

Been messin around with the engine cover.....fits pretty well now but I have a problem with getting the damn thing to open !!!

I managed to bust the cable release but that aside...when the latch is released, it does not pop up at all, you need to lift the lid. Not a problem when I'm standing at the back with my emergency release but impossible if using the pull in the passenger compartment. In the past, I pulled the knob, locked it off with mole grips and walked around the back to lift the lid.

Its the standard cmc latch....any advice ?

They all work like that.

I've been thinking of getting a small hood pop-up spring and mounting that back there to to pop the cover 1" or so when the knob is pulled, but haven't made a trip to the junk yards to find one yet.

I think Blackie's PO removed the return spring in the latch. When I pull my interior release it stays out, allowing me to go around and lift the lid open. Then I close the lid and just push the knob back in engaging the latch.

No, the spring is probably there, but from my current build I can tell you that the spring is no way capable of pulling the cable back through the tube to return to "zero". It would need to be many times stronger than it is. Just remember to push the knob back aftr the engine cover is open.

Friggin lousy design, anyway......

i thought it was just my mechanism. i took it apart, lubed it, made sure the spring was all good.

still not enough. i'm somewhat glad to hear others are in this boat too.

has anyone added a more powerful spring to popup the decklid?

Mine was a pain too (Chesil) I put a second cable with the pull located under the engine tin. A secondary just in case I can't get the one inside the drivers area to open it.

Ahh well, just something to live with !

I have put in an emergency release, an old choke cable that exits in the wheel arch.

For the "not popping up" issue, I've decided on the high tech solution of carrying a wooden "wedge" to pop in behind the knob when in the out position :)
