I've had basal and squamous types removed, one reason I pretty much limit myself to tin-tops now.  Skin cancer can seem almost trivial when caught early, but I've seen it take a life.  Don't ignore it and hope it'll go away.

Hi Lane, you are right on the money. Had my surgery Friday, took some of my ear off but I'll live. The Type of cancer was Actinic Keratosis, not the nasty stuff but if not taken care of can turn into something worse and even death. So, I'm down for at least 7 days - feels like I have someone pulling on my ear with plyers. Thank god for pain killers......

This is just part of my routine physicals now. I go in for a check, come back and get 4 or 5 spots buzzed off.

I'm not stopping anything for that. If I have to stop doing what I love for a non-cancerous or precancerous squamous sarcoma, I may as well just quit now because they're coming regardless. I started wearing a hat, but I hate it (they're blazing hot). That's as far as I take it until I start losing more than a spot here or there.

I'm erring on the side of caution.

I get it. Everybody's different.

I'd rather not err at all, but erring out of caution is definitely not my jam. I'd rather err on the wide side of caution and fix what may (or may not) break.

Mom has had chunks of her upper arm and cheeks removed (from melanoma -- I made her get checked out), so I know what's possible. The hats will have to suffice until it gets worse.

I'm with Lane on this.

Funny little spots are nothing to mess around with.

Most of them are easily dealt with. But not all. And most of us can't tell the difference between the easy ones and the not so easy. I remind the doctor at every visit about my family history.

My dad ignored one a little too long before having it checked out.

He was gone within a year.

For the most part, I do what I want, when I want, and where I want, but not without some regard for what's prudent. And that needn't make me any less free or less alive. The longer I live, the more I get to enjoy.

So, I still wear a hat outside.

And driving the Speedster is just about the most fun you can have with your hat on.

Sorta?

You drive a convertible with a hat... exactly like I'm doing. Lane says he's not driving a convertible at all anymore. It seems like your alignment is with the rhetoric (rather than the reality), since you're with Lane but doing what I do.

Regardless, everybody draws their lines in different places for their own reasons. It's got to make sense to your own way of looking at it. I'm wearing a hat now as a concession to my longstanding baldness, but I don't have to love it.

You doing you is exactly as it should be.

I wear a hat in the Speedster up until I get over about 30mph.

Then it always flies off.........

Except for my Bruce Meyers autographed sun visor hat that looks like the visor @MusbJim has, but without the additional hair.  For some reason, it never flies off at speed.  I bet his doesn't, either.  And it keeps the sun off his Guamaniac noggin.

I wore a hat in the Speedster (and the Midget before it) as much for the visor as for sun protection.  They don't fly off if you make them tight enough.  Or you can use Velcro.

I do get a hankering' for a convertible now and again, so I see where Stan is coming from.  Of course for at least 4 months a year here you want the top up for shade.

I tried the tight enough part, but when I got the hat tight enough to not fly off, it kept cutting off the blood circulation to my head.

The Velcro works (sort of), but after sticking the hook side to my head and the loop side to the inside of the hat, that adhesive is a bear to get off.  🤯

I wondered about that as well. Perhaps Lane makes a lanyard and vecros (velcroes?) the lanyard to his collar?

This is yet another reason I like to be low in the car. I can wear almost any cap or hat and it won't fly off. The go-to is a ventilated wide-brimmed hat with a chin-strap that will save the hat if it starts to go, but I can wear a cadet hat or a newsboy cap as long as I'm diligent.

They all have bills or brims, because what's the point otherwise?

I had a full body screening for any skin cancer due to seeing moles on top of moles. No signs of any skin cancers but my concern was Agent Orange exposure. Already under treatment for prostate and bladder cancers attributes to AO along with 2 other AO maladies. I urge all Vets that served in Vietnam, Thailand and other Asian countries to check in their closest VA center. AO was used around other military installations on aircraft that may have been used to transport or spray it.

Being short has a great advantage in the speedster. I can wear any hat at any speed and be fine. Like Stan I sit low.. it helps being 5'4" so I am under the windshield. Also having a full head of hair and slathering on sunscreen helps.

I'm 5'9" and wear a hat when it's sunny in the Spyder(full Speedster glass shield). I've never lost one, but I make them pretty snug. I usually take the hat off when exceeding 80mph, just to make sure I don't lose it.

I know Gordon is shorter than I am so I'm confused as to what the problem is?

I keep a tube of sunscreen in door pocket of both vert and TT for arms, ears, face as needed & ball cap for shade on my head (I still have hair so I don't know how else to sunscreen my scalp.)

beach, outdoors, mowing or if I know I'm going to be driving long between 10am-3pm  this the go to __> https://tilley.com/products/tm...riant=42115890086056  has adjustable string straps to keep it on your head.. really good airflow (better than ball cap by far), can buy size "to fit" and floppy enough head rest doesn't bother it.

Don't know how this will work with speedy.. but works great with 335vert and Audi TT.  (never felt it pull- so strap is insurance.... but don't drive without it in place)

Now back to Larry's problem... did you get it sorted yet?  ignition/spark delivery problem??

Hi Wrenn......I had surgery on Friday and had a small part of my ear removed due to skin cancer, unfortunately I am forbidden to go in the garage until this weekend and let the stiches heal up a bit. Having the darndest time getting the points set up correctly so while I am healing up, I ordered a electronic ignition kit (replacing the points) set from EMPI and see how they are to set up. From all I've read installing them should not be a problem. I'll let everyone know how that turns out. For now, I hope that overall, it will be an electrical problem......Thanks!

If the electronic ignition kit is a Pertronix, be aware that it's life will be defined by engine compartment temps- they have a history of not lasting very long when the temperatures they're subjected to is substantially higher than ambient.  With airflow THROUGH the engine compartment, the engine will run cooler, be at optimal tune more of the time and last longer as well.  If, after a drive, you can't touch the engine sheet metal for more than a moment (or a drop of water or spit sizzles on the case) your engine is getting TOO HOT!!! and if this continues it's only a matter of time before TROUBLE rears it's ugly head down the road...

PS- by carrying a complete distributor ready to pop in (complete with a bracket attached and already timed to the engine) in the spare box in the car (along with a socket and ratchet for the hold down nut on the case), you'll be be prepared if/when it goes for a crap.

That's all great, but now my "spares" kit has expanded to the size that I need to pull a trailer to hold it all.

I used to cart around a Bosch distributor, complete with clamp, POINTS (just to be careful and old school), condenser, cap and plug wires, just in case.  Then I got a Magna-Spark with a different cap and wires and I ain't about to put up another $300 to duplicate that.  I have a spare cap and module and that will have to suffice.

Does anyone want to buy a new old stock Bosch 009 disti with a couple of spare caps and 10mm plug wires??  I just need to get stuff out of my shop's attic.

Like several others have said, don't ignore anything suspicious, have it checked by a dermatologist.  In fact, even if you don't have anything suspicious see a dermatologist at least once a year and preferably twice.  I see mine at least every other month and sometimes more!  So far this year alone, I've had 2 Mohs procedures, one Squamous cell and the other a Basal cell.  I've also had a Melanoma, that my dermatologist discovered when it was very small.  At least 4 of my Mohs procedures were on my face, but my dermatologist is so good you would never know it.  Here's a picture. brad-pitt-attends-the-premiere-of-20th-century-foxs--square

The Magna-Spark seems to be made with better parts, Gordon, so I don't think you have to worry...

Stan, that was then, this is now.

Post Covid, no one goes to 'work' anymore.

We're mostly at the beach all day with our laptops. The bummer is those PITA clients who insist on a face-to-face. Then, you've got to put a shirt on and find a Starbucks.

Yeah -- I guess my perspective got clouded by my blue collar, working-class, Midwestern protestant work ethic again. I feel like such a prole.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

Shrimp tacos -- they're not just for "after work" anymore.

When I got my Magnaspark, I skipped their 'drypack' coil and just kept using my old Bosch blue coil. It's still sparking 10 years later.

But, this is long after 'Bosch' meant 'made in the Fatherland'. Today, I think they're made in various mud huts in various third world countries.

Some online folklore I read a number of years ago said the best Bosch coils then available had the number 0 221 119 027 stamped on the bottom, and mine does. So, there's that.

I think the term 'drypack' is newspeak for 'damned if we're bothering to fill them with an oil bath like the originals had'.

Dunno if mine is filled with oil (for heat dissipation) or with that newer, cheaper plastic gel they use, but, as I say, it is still sparking.

And I'll mention in passing that it's mounted, not fashionably on the shroud like in the good old days, but in a cooler corner of the engine bay, back near the tail lights.

My mohs surgery is tomorrow morning. Big chunk to remove from the upper 1/3 of the bridge of my nose. This thing popped up suddenly with an open wound that wouldn't heal, the day after a visit to my dermatologist.

Biopsied as basal cell carcinoma.

I checked the more than a dozen codes that my insurance approved and several are for various size skin grafts from my ears.

Will I be able to hear through my nose?
