Anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting the source of an exhaust smell that permeates the car (and clothing) while driving. I have a 40+ year vw mechanic looking at the car on Monday and would like to give him some possibilities. The car runs good so I'm not sure if it's from improperly set carbs. It's a 2100 cc dual carb motor with only 6,000 or so miles on it. As you can probably tell, I know very little about these cars/motors. I'm essentially a newbie who purchased Gerry Wongs Intermeccanica (Toronto)last year and have put a total of 200 miles on the car. Any input/help appreciated. Thanks

search the site for history on this subject.

1. depending the type of exhaust/heater box setup you have you might be leaking exhaust fumes into your heating system

2. depending where your exhaust pipe exits your car body it could
be into a "low pressure" area sucking the exhaust back into your
car envelope (if you will). aerodynmaics play a part here, look at the
back of mini vans, dirty.

3. if it's fuel vapor people have had issues with the venting of their
filler necks (fuel tanks)
