I have looked all over for the engine Id number in the location Type 1 blocks have and found nothing other than a W stamped in the block at that location. Finally when I was under the car pulling off the old exhaust system I located a series of numbers stamped on each side of the block and up on the case where it attaches to the trans axle.

The numbers I found are : WO.101.102 these numbers match no Type1-Type3 including Ghias that I've found.

So I, on a whim wondering if it just might have a Porsche 914-4 block, searched 914-4 engine id numbers...and I discovered the block is a '71 914-4 block according to the id charts I found online. The location of the Id numbers on the 3 locations also match where the 914-4 locations are given.

Thought that was interesting, a genuine Porsche 'engine'...LOL... everything else on the engine is typical VW aftermarket

The spark plug ports are moved maybe 2" for 2L over the 1.7/1.8L. The Intake on the 2L had 3 studs while the 1.7/1.8L has 4 studs.  The 411/412/Bus has lower compression pistons (concave) while the 914 were convex for higher compression. The 1.7L was probably strongest built with little problems with cracks in heads. 80 hp stock isn't bad out of the box. The oil filter adapter is bolted on and can be moved/eliminated. The oil filler spout is different between the two.  All were built by VW though.

Frankly I do not care if it is a Porsche block...I was curious as to what year the engine was. From my research I understand that the introduction of the 914-4 was a joint VW/Porsche project.

Whether my block is or is not a 'Porsche' block makes no difference to me.

This engine was built by CB performance in 2009. The heads are aftermarket as is the intake and most everything else inside and out.

I do not know enough about VW/Porsche engines to quantify any friggin' thing. I just found the id numbers fell in line with a '71 1.7L 914-4. I just found it interesting that this block was used in a 1915cc rebuild.

Type 4 or Porsche block I could care less.

I dont think there are many after markett heads for the type 4 engine(there are some that can be converted or the scat split port heads ).have a look at the pic above and determan is yous is a type 4 or type 1. type one have the exhaust coming out the side of the heads, type 4 has them exiting the bottom of the heads.you need to identify what you realy have. my cases dont have any numbers either as they are not vw cases
. also the uni cases dont have numbers.if cb built it it probably had a new uni case, and is probably a type 1 too.

if you want it to be a porsche just add a porsche sticker.....kinda like chevy, buick, olds, pontyaic cadda lack. ford, mercury, lincolinlogs. dodge, plymouth.and the list go's on.including vw and porch. tiodie, sion, lexs.
