I'm just curious about a minor detail - the recessed box area of the engine lid beneath the grill - mine is painted flat black, how were the originals finished, body color, black, or what?

I think the area that you are talking about was originally done in the body color. I bought a pre A engine lid, thinking that I would get the metal lid stamped with some louvers. (alas, doesn't fit on my speedster) The lid I have has either has the original paint or was taken down to the metal and refinished. It is all one color, everywhere.

Mine were same as the body thru and thru.
On my replicar I have put a red louvred plate beneath the chrome grill...I think it makes a nice contrast against the black decklid
