Does anyone know where to source the piece that hold the engine lid down? I have this rather hokey-ooking bolt which appears to be 5/16" diameter.

Jeff, if you are starting from scratch, you'll need several items. Give Vintage a call.
hardware store, just cut off the head and a little more.

I think he is missing the bear claw side. It looks like this. If you can't find I think I have extra one but check with VS as bolts would line up then.

No, I have the bear claw piece. My picture above shows the bolt that is on the lid and snaps into the bear claw. It looks very home made, and I would have expected some type of smooth chrome looking piece perhaps a bit tapered at the end. I'll call VS to see what else is offered for this.
On CMCs it is indeed a bolt with the head cut off. A Stainless Steel one would give a more finished look. With the head cut off there would be no threads showing. Add couple SS washers and nuts to complete the "upgrade". You could file and polish the end to get a more finished look - as stainless doesn't readily rust.
