Is anyone familiar with SPECTRO brand motor oil?
The counter man said it's comparable to Brad Penn (which he doesn't carry)...but he didn't look me in the eye when saying it

I just bought a case of Brad Penn, and it's what I will be using exclusively in my Speedster. Sorry, I can't comment on the Spectro brand.
It's made to work in motorcycles and they do offer a partial synthetic, like Brad Penn. it's probably fine.
How much per qt.?

Comparable could mean anything. Cooking oil is comparable! I don't know anything about SPECTRO, I'm just posting to boost my Activity Points.
"Cooking oil is comparable" Troy, I spit my coffee out LOL.
The makers will glady provide the levels of zinc and the other goodies so you can compare.
brad penn 40 weight and nothing else was what i used
Their technical data for the Platinum 4 full synthetic says it's
A.P.I. SG/SH/SL/JASO MA and MA2 so I would THINK it's got the necessary zddp requirements, but an email to them would confirm.
Off the top of my head, I can think of three oils that work well in an air cooled engine:
1. Brad Penn
2. Swepco
3 DT50 (Jake Raby's new oil)
Hey Gerdddddd, they don't mean as a lube in bed.....dickhead
Due to the metallic composition of the VW motor, Beck manual recommends:
Brad Penn 20w50
Castrol GTX High Mileage 20w50
Mobile 1 EP 15w50
Mobile 1 Super Syn 15w50
Mobile 1 V-Twin 20w50
Redline 10w40
Rotella 15w40
Rotella 5w40
Royal Purple 20w50
Royal Purple Max Cycle 10w50
Royal Purple Max Cycle 20w50
Royal Purple Racing 51 20w50
Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40
Hope this helps
Thanks guys for the comments. I'm sticking with the 'tried and true' stuff and asked if anyone was familiar with the brand because it is less expensive than Brad Penn.
and Troy...I wish I'd been quick witted enough, while at the parts counter, to come up with your response...Priceless. I choked on my coffee too Jack!!

I have been using SWEPCO in my 911 for years. It is the recommended one for the 1972 911. Brad Penn has a similar formula. Neither oil is a full synthetic, but rather a blend that works well for air-cooled engines. I buy it by the case from a guy in San Rafael, CA. He delivers it to my door. Valvoline is good, also, but I haven't been able to find it locally. Royal Purple is available, but quite expensive. Rotella is at Walmart, but IIRC, some folks steered away from it for some reason. Frankly, I think any of these oils is good...especially if you put only a thousand miles or so per year on the car and change the oil frequently. Most oils do their damage when left in the car over a long period due to acid buildup. Acids build up mostly on short trips.
I change my oil right before I store the car for the winter to almost eliminate acids that might be present from driving prior to storage.
I have been using 20W50 Swepco, but it is a bit thick. I will use 20W40 or 10W40 the next time I place my order. You want Zinc and Phosphorus in your oil as additives; unfortunately, the Federal Government has all but stripped these out of many/most oils for (at least) air-cooled engines. I might be wrong here, but this is what I remember when I owned a BMW bike.
I use full synthetic Mobil 1 for the 550's water-cooled Subaru engine, with either a Wix or Mahle filter. Larry Jowdy swears by the Wix, but I can't tell the difference by visual examination. My brief experience with full synthetic oil in air-cooled engines is that it leaks. IMO, the Fram filters are garbage....at least the cheaper off-the-shelf non-racing variety. I change the filter each time I change oil....every 3,000 miles or at least once a year. It's cheap insurance to keep the engine happy.
The Rotella's formulation has been changed and it no longer has the zddp additives our flat tappet motors require. Valvoline's VR1 line is also flat tappet compatible, but make sure to get the one with the detergent pack for the street (racing oil is to be changed after each race).
Valvoline VR1 racing oil is available at your local parts store, is priced like plain ole cheap oil and has "old fashioned Zinc additives" in it.
Al and Alan, that's good to know. I'll have to check out Valvoline VR1's price. I'm presently running 15/40 Swepco in my IM and Westy and it's pricey at $10 per quart. Brad Penn is cheaper at around $8.00 a quart.
Rotella used to be such a great, inexpensive choice.
When I put the oil recommendations in the Beck owner's manual, I put it in alphabetical order, with Brad Penn coincidentally coming first. That was shortly after reading a long post by Jake Raby explaining an analytical comparison study he had done in which Brad Penn was head and shoulders above the others. His new favorite oil came out since that study was done. I have stuck with Brad Penn based on what he said, and even though I have to order it, it's reasonably priced. I'd like to hear from Jake why he now likes the new one.

I'm with Alan on this and use VR1. A year or so ago, Will posted a message about a special deal on VR1 at O'Reilly and I ran out and bought every case in town.
For air cooled engines has anyone considered Amsoil synthetic? About $8 quart and the test specs are impressive. I use it in both the air cooled engines I own.
I also use VR-1, I got my information from a shop that works on VW and Porsche and are Air Cool Guys.
