I have an 1835cc engine with dual Kadrons and a cd ignition. The engine starts easily but wants to backfire thru the carbs and exhaust for about the first 15 to 20 minutes of running. I usually let it warm up for 5 minutes before even attempting to take off and then "cough and puke" around town for at least another 10 or 15 minutes before it finally smooths out and runs like a champ. I have adjusted the valves to the Haynes book recommendation (forgot what they were as it was last fall; .004/.006 maybe?)and a buddy who worked at a VW shop for many years set the timing and rebuilt the carbs. Any suggestions?

Ron,

It sounds like a lean problem, but you ALSO have to remember that the Kads have no chokes so you'll have that problem until the engine warms up.

If/when you make your carb adjustments, make sure that it's a nice warm day, 80's would be perfect, and make sure that the engine is all warmed up as well.

Wait 'til the Winter if you wanna see some REAL popping and sputtering.
