Hello,

intense search on speedster replicas led me to this forum. Fine cars and lots of infos :-) Thumbs up
I'm getting more and more familiar with the idea of buying/building a Speedster replica, but some important infos are still not known:
- Who builds the engine for VS and JPS (CB Performance, SCAT, ...?) and how would you rate them?
- How would you rate the cars of VS and JPS at all?

My current plan is either to buy and modify a '57 carrera GT or GS look-a-like or built it completely by myself from the kit.

Sadly, i haven't found any vendors of two important things:
1) single Sebring-style racing exhaust: ceramic oval-rectangular one (not like the one JPS and other usually install)
2) Carrera-style fan shroud (not Type I or IV porsche style fan shroud)

Regarding B) is found the thread where the self-made carrera shroud was shown. Very nice, but DIY in both cases is no option for me.
So if someone knows someone who builds such parts, please tell me.

Best regards
Markus

Is this what you're looking for?

The red one can be had for several hundred dollars.

The black one goes for $150,000.00

Jake Raby, engine builder of Type IV engines is attempting to re-create a version of the 4 cam Porsche engine fan shroud.

Markus,

There are a few exhausts that can be made to look like the Sebring exhaust. I'll attach a few photos here. The one on the Merlot car is one we scratch built. The Mexico Blue car is a modified A1 system. Both of these are built specifically around our platform and I cannot say if they will fit other makes.

The Carrera 4 cam style shroud is something that is in development between my company and Aircooled Tech (Jake Raby) but is a long way off. No other currently available that I am aware of.

target release of the "X4CS" cooling system is mid 2009, then it will only be available on Type 1 engines from Special Edition (Beck)on their turn key cars and will remain that way for at least 18 months.

Developing this system isn't easy and takes tons of time to do right. Thats the only way I do things-

Trying it yourself will more than likely cost you at least one engine- if you are lucky.
I don't believe that VS engines are "made in Mexico". Here's what I have learned---I think and would welcome additional info:

The engine case is brand new Mexican.

The crank is NOT cast (as some have said) but forged.

Some parts are Brazilian or Mexican but all brand new.

I have heard that the engine is assembled at VS but I personally doubt that. Anyone know about this?

This info is worth every cent you paid for it----seriously--who can asdd to this info?----Jack
The best person to ask about VS engines would be VS...
The VS cars built for Automotive Legends that I saw in Camarillo all had stock VW Mexico crate motors for the 1600 and stock VW Mexico crate motors w/ new P&C for the 1915. The fact that I saw 1/2 dozen cars to that spec really means nothing... they could have been ordered that way, could be standard, I really don't know. And that's the limitation of my knowledge on that subject.

I DO know that CB will not build them any motors due to a falling out they had over a carb fire.

I don't know squat about John's engine builder(s)...

Speaking about things I don't know much about, Lane, I don't know the fate of the shroud... I will certainly put you at the top of the list for updates as things progress. Initial plans, which were very loose, were to only offer it on Jake's turn-key motors built for my products and some of his "special" clients. Anyway, I'll shoot you an e-mail on the subject before I head home.

Jack; I've heard different versions but I've seen photos of VS's shop and I've noticed boxes of Mahle pistons & cylinders so it wouldn't surprise me they'd do the work in-house. These motors aren't that complicated after you go through the learning curve; that's why they're engineering marvels, right?
This probably falls under ancient history, but six years ago, when JPS built me a type 4, the source was German Auto in Sante Fe Springs (L.A.). I knew NOTHING about VWs back then. If I were to do it again today, I would source my own engine and deliver to JPS for install. Another option is just get the kit "turnkey minus" and install yourself. You'd have to negotiate the final dial-in and each party responsibility for final performance.
David-

When I had my JPS built in 2002, I tried to do just what you are suggesting, but John Steel told me "no".

In 2005, I asked Henry from Intermeccanica to do the same thing, and he was delighted to oblige. I sent him a Rancho pro-street transaxle built with my gearing choices, which he installed to set up the suspension, etc. When the car arrived to me, I installed my own 2110. It's a great way to go.

I'm pretty sure Kirk from Vintage would be happy to do the same thing, which would seem to be a great idea given the track record of hopped up mexi-crates.
