Hi my name is Mike,
I have a CMC wide body, and moving through my build (many thanks to Danny P). I am at the point of needing to get the engine tins together. I did a lot of searching on the forum as well as elsewhere and seeing a lot of posts with pictures missing etc. (mainly because the posts are very old). Wondering if anyone has a source for quality tins as well as if anyone would be kind enough to share some pics and templates if possible.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mike, what color is your car? Is it Slate gray? The paint looks really good, and once he's done it will present well.

I know some people on here have templates for CMC tins, that's what he needs.

Besides the breast plate and the tin that goes across the back at the engine/trans junction. But these last two he can source locally(I hope).

Posting from last week with pictures of OEM tin.

Years ago your CMC came with body colored fiberglass rough cut pieces for the sides and 2 (upper and lower) for the rear. Do yu still have them or are they MIA?

If you have those you just need a late (72-75ish) bus H foam gasket.  The "firewall" side just gets a rubber skirt once the Moon shaped piece is cut out (see build manual).  If those pieces are milling use card board to make a template.

They can still probably get through the grille on the lid.

I have had one infestation in my shroud and when I was building my engine I found mouse poison on top of the pistons.

I installed the screen mostly to prevent road debris from going into the fan while driving.

I made two D-shaped aluminum pieces and sandwiched the screen between. Then I pop-riveted that to the driver's side of the firewall.

I can send the pattern for the D pieces to anyone who wants it.  It is for a CMC.  I don't know it the cutout is the same on other flavors.

Guys Thanks for all the replies.
@DannyP Yes the color is Slate Gray! I actually gave the paint guy the paint code and he matched it.

@WOLFGANG I bought the car from someone that did the build a long time ago (poorly) and I did not get much with it, so I do not have the fiberglass rough cut pieces for the sides and for the rear.

I am thinking, I am going to get the breast tin on there (after I buy one) then make some templates out of cardboard as suggested, and then transfer to some aluminum.

It would be great if anyone had some pics of their finished area, would love to get some further ideas.

What gauge aluminum is used with the templates?

One of the West Coast builders used to use the thin roll aluminum designed for covering house trim work.  As a side benefit it was wood grain embossed!  A little tacky to me and probably too thin.  You can get aluminum in like 1/16" (it probably goes by a gage?).  HD/Lowes have it - it also comes in polished diamond plate.

I have a set of heavy paper templates for a CMC/VS car.  They make two shields, one that attaches to the bottom of the horse shoe shaped frame surrounding the engine, and another that goes on top of that frame closing the area behind the frame back to the body and all the way to the sidewalls beyond the tail lights.

I ask $5 bucks for them which mostly covers shipping.  PM me and I’ll give you my address, then just pop a 5 dollar bill into an envelope with your return address and I’ll get them out as soon as I get your letter.

I used common, 19 gauge HVAC galvanized sheetmetal (steel, not aluminum) and it was cheap and works great.  Often a sheetmetal place will give you scraps that can work for free.  Mine are well supported by the frame so there are no rattles or drumming underway.

Been debating this (now at the end of the build). It's kinda like the eternal boxers vs. briefs dilemma. Lots of air flow or????

The design of the cooling system supposes drawing cool air into the fan from the grill, blowing it across the cylinders and the oil cooler, and venting it out the bottom rear of the flapper boxes underneath the car. Not having these pieces in place allows the fan to pull in hot air from underneath the car.

That's a big no no Boothy. See dlear476's post for the explanation.
