I noticed two square hole in the upper cyl head tinware: one on each side of the rear (over the exhaust port on each side of the rear of the engine). It looks like there is a mild oval "indent" around each of the square holes. What originally filled those holes? I'd like to replace whatever goes in those square holes, but didn't see anything in any of the SOC engine pics I looked at...VW part # if they are available? I tried C1P but didn't see anything, and TheSamba had tinware pics but no reference to what would fill those square holes. I'm assuming it's some sort of "clip" that pushes into / occupies those square holes?

A photo would really help to answer your question
2 possible answers without seeing the aformentioned holes.

If the holes are small, some engines had plastic inserts that pushed into the holes in the tin and the inserts held spark plug wires or fuel line
If this area is close to the edge of the tin then maybe it's where 2 pieces of tin come together and are fastened via a screw
