Hi folks, I'm new to the group. I have been an aircooled VW guy for 20 years. I'm on the East Coast and many of you may know me from the Lars Anderson VW show where I vend every year. I have Type I, Type II engines, carbs, P/C's, transmissions, parts, parts parts. I can be reached at 603.205.4430

Currently have a 1700cc Porsche 914 engine and 5 speed trans. Engine is fresh rebuild with paperwork. (Solid lifter) from a respected Porsche firm in Maine.

I also have an 1835cc which is currently using 92mm P/C's but would be easily brought up to 94's or down to a 1776cc with 90.5's. Fresh engine.

After that, I have lots of Type II hydraulic 2 litre VW engines that are good candidates for rebuild. Also have some cool cars. I'm a newbie and this is my first post.

I'm in Somersworth, NH.

Sorry folks, I wasn't aware there was a paid membership available. I just found a widebody 1972 FiberFab, in need of resurrection, found your group and joined. I'll dig around and find out how to pay. As far as vending, I do have stuff. A lot of it. Pretty good with performance knowledge, but I will reconsider vending if this is a problem. I just want to get my widebody up to snuff and do not vend for a living by a long shot.

Warning to Newbies or those AC fans thinking of participating on this site:

1. Be prepared to provide all the specs on your engine and proof thereof plus your logic for those choices.

2. Be prepared to defend your position as a non-paying SOC participant.

3. Be prepared to abandon the anonymity of your avatar or screen name and use only your proper given legal name.

4. Be prepared to be graded on your grammar and sentence structure.

Only then, shall you be Welcomed To The Madness!

imageFair enough Bob. This is how I found it.  The frame head plate has a bit of rust, but I'm not sure if there's any rot on it yet. The floors are good with the exception of where the seats were bolted to the pan and under the brake pedal. Standard pan issues on a vehicle that has sat for a while.  The engine is a Stock 1600cc Volkswagen. Missing the engine tin around the engine.  The chassis and pans were cut down 10 inches in a Vee as shown in the building sheets. However, it doesn't look like it was stitched back together properly on the floorboards at least. Any seam sealer on the pans is long gone, so some chassis work is going to be required. Front beam looks good, fit and finish a bit sloppy. I will likely go with four wheel disks and make the front beam adjustable. I have some Koni Reds in the garage that would be nice on this suspension. For an engine I would like to go with 1915cc 69mm crank (stock VW) with some nice high end heads and 94mm p/c with possibly an Engle FK7 (low lift heavy duration so I can run single springs) with some scat 1.4:1 ratio rockers. Solid lifters. Stock balanced VW rods, mounted on stock crank and lightened flywheel balanced as a unit.  I have a few case choices, but the best case I have is a stock VW single relief with adjuster. I'll likely full flow it and use a typeII oil cooler and two quart sump. Not sure I like the single relief case yet.  For carbs I have a set of Weber 48 IDA's (Italian ones) with Deano dinosaur D port intakes that I will match to the heads and carbs and lightly polish. I love the Gene Berg weighted pully. It really smooths out the engine much like a damper on a regular engine. I have an original Gene Berg locking shifter. Interior would eliminate the mouse poop stained red carpet and would likely be an oatmeal square weave. That's enough for now, I still have yet to buy the vehicle as it is winter and is not going anywhere at the moment. This would be a keeper for sure, as I have been looking for one for sometime now.

Now that's what I'm talking about...full disclosure.  Looks to be a project for sure but judging from that posts it sounds like you have the skill set to see the project through.  That also means that you're probably right in the sense that the car's not going anywhere for now. Most on here would disagree about waiting for Spring, Winter is the time to buy so you can disassemble said car and get it ready for Spring. Spring is driving season and Winter is tinkering season for these babies.

She may not ever be a trailer queen, but that's not how I build cars initially.  I'd like to have all the mechanics completed first, and the work on the esthetic.  My main belief is that if it looks like a sports car it should perform at the sports car! I like to build cars that are sleepers, but fully wake up when intimidated By an overbuilt Honda or Vette.

David, feel free to stop in on your next trip. I've done a lot of business in Canada with VW Campers. (My specialty) Even donated one to a deserving couple whose camper basically rusted in half. I Vacation in Canada on the West coast every year. My best friend lives in Victoria. Wells is VERY close to where I live. Looking forward to chatting with you folks. I think I will like this forum.

Hi, Matt - I'm down near Worcester, MA.  If you've been to one of the VolksVair shows at Hebert's Candy Mansion in the past few years, you might have seen my pearl white CMC Speedster there.  There are a couple of other people working on CMC's, mostly down toward the Boston area.  You'll certainly have a lot of fun restoring/rebuilding your speedster, and there is a LOT of info on this site, buried away in older posts, that can save you a lot of time.  Learn how to use the search function - it could save you a lot of time and frustration.

Welcome to the group and hope to see you at a local event soon.

thanks for that, Matteo. I've added your phone number to my list of contacts from various areas. We'll try to stop over for a bit this summer. Here's a nice pic of my car back in 2013 in Biddeford, Me.  We were on our way up to Becky's Diner in Portland.

My car is no show queen....I put serious miles on it. Here's a link to a nice trip we did in 2012.  We've done over 50,000 miles in five years with a little help from some friends.

Yeah, make the plunge and start working on it.  I promise you that it'll take longer than you expect to finish it, but we'll all work with you to get you there and pass along all the tips we can.

I do the Hebert's show in Shrewsbury on Route 20, usually the first weekend in August.  the only other VW show I do is the Connecticut VW club's big one - usually somewhere mid-state (Used to be the Litchfield show).

I do a number of events with the TYP356ne club.  We'll be setting the event schedule for 2016 in early February and it'll show up on the club website typ356ne.org

Se you around New England!
