... or maybe the "Have You Ever" Dept; better still the "WTF" Dept.  Anyway, after lunch at the new Chick-fill-A down the street from my house, where the manager is giving away free sandwiches to everyone in my Zip code, I was looking forward to a short but spirited drive over to my Credit Union for some high financial dealings.  Car has been running exceptionally well recently, txs again to Perfesser Piperato for his magic caresses to Webers at Carlisle.  So off I go. All of a sudden while contemplating the correct speed for a wide sweep to the left, this horrendous noise starts up, so suddenly and so dramatic, I'm not sure its the car, but it must be.  Sounds like a header just fell off. Or a big hole just erupted in the muffler, or I can't really tell what. Staccato high pitched sorta exhaust type sound. Car is running well enough, nothing shaking apart, will idle. So look for a shady spot off to the side, look underneath, can't see or detect anything. Engine idling at this point making all this racket.  Sure sounds like it is above the tins, not below.  Pop the bonnet, start looking.  So the question is: has anyone else actually spit out a spark plug??  Well, so there it is, laying there  at the rear right with wire attached.  No shyt??!!. Turn it off, dive into the tool bag, screw it back in there and off we go.  Total elapsed time about 4.5 mins. Note the very important part: it does in fact screw right back in there.

PS: as mentioned engine seems to be running well the last few weeks, and now with a tight plug in there, maybe even better.

PPS: I have no supporting forensics, but it is possible that the last set of fingerprints on that plug belong to Mr.Piperato.  Couldn't swear to it, but maybe . . .

Yup......Happened a few times on school buses and once on a dune buggy coming home from the beach.  That one had the plug hanging beside the valve cover, still attached to the plug wire.

I never use a torque wrench on plugs (probably should with aluminum heads, huh?) and very rarely had one back out, but it does happen.   Never had one blown out, threads and all, but have seen a few on other people’s engines that had had the plugs over-tightened when installed.  Guess slightly loose is better than wicked tight for spark plugs and there is a reason they give us torque settings for aluminum heads......
