I was able to check out this car yesterday. I intended to buy it, had the check in my pocket that is until I was able to look it over closely. While a fair price is in the opinion of the buyer and seller, I think this one is a bit overpriced. The new paint is applied over some bondo filled holes that are now popping. Some of the body work looks like I did it, and that is not good. There are fisheyes and pits in some areas. It looks great from 10 feet away.
The engine is missing a fair amount of tin, 1776cc with dual single barrel Solex carbs, reportedly rebuilt in the last 2000 miles. The interior carpeting has no bound edges. The pans have been repaired in a fashion I personally would not have selected, nor do I expect to find in a $20k+ car. The chrome is badly pitted on the vent frames and the parking lights and other places. The wiring I looked at was not acceptable to me, in this price range car.
The tires looked good as did the suspension, swing axle with ball joint front end. The engine was built by a local very well thought of VW specialist, who has had several VW speed records in drag racing and sand rails. I would guess it to be pretty well done, based on this rep in the area.
I did not drive the car, there was no need to as I pretty quickly decided it would cost me another $10-15k or so to get the car to where I would want it to be.
I would think at the least this car needs a proper prep and paint job, $3000-5000, replace all the chrome $1000, have a new and proper interior done, $1000-1500, larger engine, $2500=5000, air-conditioning for Houston $1500, replace the VW drums and disks with a proper Porsche lay out (5 bolts) $1000-2000, replace all rims with proper rims to fit the new Porsche brakes, etc etc....replace the wiring harness, $500, etc etc etc....O
Overall it is not a bad car, but at $18k it is more than I think a project is worth. The owner is amiable but I think he has some bad advice on value of the car; he has an appraisal from a friend who says it should be worth maybe $25k.
Your mileage may vary.....
