As this site grows, more people = more events. Normally this is not a problem, but an unfortunate conflict did occur...
Bruce and I are putting on the Southern Oregon Tour. We held off setting a date initially (knew we wanted it end of september - early october) because there are several other established events and we did not want to conflict. Arachnamia (mostly spyders) is held in Prescott AZ. The weekend for that is September 22. The anniversary of James Dean's death is Sunday September 30th. Some people want to go to that (informal) therefore we decided to pass on that weekend as well. So Bruce and I picked October 6/7 and announced it on SOC (spyder and speedster) and Spyderowners.com some time ago.
Got commitments from spyder folk in the Bay area and northern California. Then a spyder member comes up with a really fun run on some great back-roads in his area and sets up an event. On October 6... As you would expect, the guys in that area will attend that event. Basically in their backyard - who can blame them? When they realized they stepped on our date, they apologized profusely, and it was DEFINATELY an accident.
Planning goes into these events, even the very informal ones. Bruce has arranged hotel and hotel discounts. We are arranging a non-car tour event on Friday. Wine and beer must be gathered, restaurant preps made etc. Rather unfortunate when you plan and buy for a party of say 20 people and find out that due to scheduling conflict you are going to have 8-10...
By having a calender (both sites, I'm pushing for one on spyderowners also) we can prevent this conflict and get together for events more often! It would also allow "look-ahead" scheduling for big events where people need to take time off work to attend.
