Ben,
I tried an EMPI exhaust system with dual tips that looks very much like the eBay system your link shows. The tips were too close to the apron -- they nearly touched it -- so I returned it for an EMPI single tip exhaust that has a chrome tip the that exits under the rear apron on the starboard side with about two inches of clearance. It looks and sounds terrific!
Got mine at Archway Import Auto Parts, in south Saint Louis County. The owner, Jim, and his countermen - Duke and Lester - are all VW air cooled experts and they are very helpful. They cater to original Bug, dune buggy, sand rail and replica owners. PM me for contact info.

Vince; I just checked the description of the Ebay item and it does say it fits Speedster replicas. That is very much a crapshoot; my friend Jjr has a CMC and he ordered a muffler from Kirk but it didn't fit. It seems the CMCs have a lower rear apron as compared to our VSs. Kirk told us the muffler he sold him was not a Tri-Mil but yet the muffler came in a Tri-Mil box....go figure.
Another SOC member (can't remember his name) bought a tri-mill
variety and it didn't fit, I ended up taking it off his hands
and put it on my Ghia, fit perfectly, ended up getting him one of Kirks, which did fit his speedster.....
I also think the same people made both, but they are different...
could explain the same box, perhaps.....
I'm lucky to be close to Kirk when I need something, cause I don't like to experiment like some of the other SOC members, I prefer to be able to jump in, drive 3 or 4 hundred miles and not worry about my car falling apart.....
I have one of Kirk's exhaust systems that looks like the one that Ben has mentioned. It is made in Mexico. The body on my '79 IM seems to sit lower than most, so I was pleased that this exhaust cleared the apron, barely. The exhaust tips are kind of short and will have to be extended when the bumper goes back on.

This trouble is still haunting me, and I see others in the same boat. Will a dual QP with merged header fit inside the rear apron of a CMC? Any exhaust system suggestions? What about those "Euro tuck exhausts?

Which of these have been tried and fit the CMC speedster? Anyone?
Thanks David D for the comment, very much appreciated. I have a 1776cc engine with a better than mild cam. Im hoping to get something not too restrictive. Is that euro-tuck system noisy? Thats my second concern besides not having to cut the body. Guess Im leaning towards that solution...
I thin there is lots of variation on these header kits. I had one from Chirco (probably an Empi that was too high to clear the rear apron and it exited slight off center from the car. I sent it back and bought another brand to mate to my Stinger and it exits just under the apron dead center of the car. Each brand is different.

I just bolted on an exhaust from A1 muffler and it is fantastic! I know it is talked about a lot on this forum, but I don't see any reason to buy from anyone else. It fits perfectly, even with my huge rear tires. You cannot see it from behind the car and my car is "on the ground" and it does not scrape over big speedbumps, steep drives or potholes (all of which I encountered today on my way to work).
Talk to Tiger up there and be happy!
I am using the twin muffler system on the speedster that is now on ebay, it has a nice exhaust note to it without being too noisey...you can check the look in the photo's

As I mentioned in a previous post the Hide-Away system is my first choice as it is about $130 and fits a speedter w/o alterations ..as an added plus you can easily change out the muffler to Flowmaster 40 (loud but throaty) or whatever you may choose.
Thank you for the kudos I did quite a bit to bring that speedster back to where it was when assembled 13 years ago by the previous owner as a show car.
At one timeI did have attachments to things ('57 Chevy and then a '53 Corvette) but I also like the variety as it is the true spice of life, lucky my wife is still around ....." Just kidd'in dear!"

Best to talk direct with Kirk at VS as I have yet to use one of his exhausts
