exhaust-again

I thought I did all my research when I built my gorgeous ceramic system butI think it may still be too loud for my tastes. It sounds great except when trying to carry on a conversation. I have the original Thing turbo style mufflers that came from SS Headers which flow into Magnaflow tips. I had "silencers" welded into tips and it helped but the sound is still more extreme than I would like. So any suggestions?

How about welding in 2 small glasspack mufflers.

Hello guys, I have installed a two glasspack system in my speedster and if loud is not what you want, then glasspacks are not the answer. They are definetly loud.

Go to Kirk and get his latest exhaust system...Under 200.00 for SS,
and the sound is great....thats installed if you are close enough..
Don't even need to get your hands dirty.....

Vince as always is full of pearls of wisdom. I put one of Kirks exhausts on my car and it sounds great and cost around $150 including freight. It took less than an hour to change and most of that time was taking the old one off.

Somewhere I recall that Kirk's system will not fit the older CMC body as the rear apron is lower ?

What's the valve clearance for the new VS exhaust? Enough room to adjust valves without removing exhaust?

Alan; JJr bought Kirk's exhaust for his CMC and it doesn't fit....doesn't clear the rear apron. Justin with that exhaust you won't have any problems accessing the valve covers; since it's not a header.

No, it's not a header- it's a TriMil exhaust like they sell at a lot of places in the back of Hot VWs. $85 should take you all the way. It fits, sounds, and works great, by the way. I tried four exhausts on my 1776, this one was what stayed on the car.

Justin- I know your exhaust is a pain to adjust the valves with, but it is the ultimate exhaust system for a 1776 (up to a 2 liter engine). It's got 1-1/2" primaries, and stock dual outlets. It's powder-coated, and beautiful. I'll be Jim had over $1000 in that exhaust- it's as close to perfect as you can get with these cars.

Yeah, my current exhaust which Jim put on definitely sounds "awesome". I think I will stick with it and just work around it for valves.

GQ, my idea was to cut out a section of tubing and add 2 small glass packs to the existing system.

How long is teh smallest glass pack made?

Ralph, The guy who installed my system said there are smaller ones than mine. Mine are 18" and he said there are 14" ones, but he also said that the smaller you go, the louder they get.

This site advertises 4, 5, & 6" glasspacks, I've also seen 12" ones on another site.

Spoke with Baxter and they wanted over two hundred for a pair of six inch glass packs. Just an FYI but too much for me. The sound does not bother me all teh time. Mostly when I want to have a conversation which is not that often. But I will keep looking.
