My 1641 has been running poorly lately. I went ahead and adjusted the valves and it still ran poor. I happened to notice that one of my exhaust bolts was loose on #4 cylinder. I tried to tighten it and low in behold it had stripped out, which allowed exhaust to come straight off the block. I was able to tighten the lower bolt and it works much better.
Now I have to rethread the case. Any suggestions on how to do this? I think I will need to put in a helicoil which I understand how it works but have never done. Any one ever had to do something like this? And where do I get the parts. Wil

I just hope you haven't burnt the exhaust valve on #4; I've heard that it can happen when the exhaust system is loose on the head.

With respect to the helicoils; I did them years ago in a local VW shop I used to work in; mostly in stripped spark plug holes. Depending on the size you'll need to tap the damaged threads with an oversize tap and the helicoil goes right in and acts as the new thread. In cases I've seen what they call case savers, not really helicoils.
Will, to answer your question. If the stud is stipped, then go to your local auto parts store. Ask for an 8 mm Helicoil kit. It comes complete with a course tap, a drill bit, a helicoil installer tool and the heli coils. Drill out the hole, use the course tap then install the heli coil. The heli coil has course threads on the outside that match up with the tap. The inside threads are 8MM and a new exhaust stud will screw into the heli coil.

Use loctite on the helicoil to anchor it against the cylinder head.
