need your help.  Been readying all the postings on vintage speed exhaust, and its not clear if their "speedster replica" exhaust part number fits vintage speedsters without notching the valance.

I'm interested in upgrading my exhaust, and want to keep the pea shooter look.  Vintage Speed seems to get good reviews... Well, not as good as A1's, but I like the looks of the VS.

has anyone installed p/n 155-204-05200 or - 052SF on their Vintage Speedster built car, without having to notch the valance or modify the exhaust?  This is the p/n they claim has been modified for speedster replicas... By lowering the pipes from the VW beetle specific exhaust VS part number155-203-05200.

your help would be greatly appreciated! Would hate to buy, and then need to either notch valance or modify exhaust.   Don't have much free time lately.  Million thanks.

Thank you Chris and Ron.

Chris- The exhaust looks awesome!  Couple quick Qs--

1) Is the SF loud enough to hinder conversations with the mrs during weekend cruising??  just curious. She thinks the standard tri-mill is borderline too loud, specially at highway RPMs.

i have been debating between the standard or SF...  my engine is a 1915cc, and i don't really need the larger hp rated pipe, but it would breathe better.

2) Are those the standard 20cm length pipes, or did you have them built a little longer~ 22-23cm.  i saw some debate on the length topic in the forum, some claiming they were too short.

a million thanks,

luis

I had a tri-mill and the SF Vintage Speed is definitely quieter.  I still felt the highway speed noise of my car was too high, so I dynamatted the underside of the rear decklid, the body above the transmission, and I dynamated my carburetor rain hats.  The cruising volume is right where I want it now.

As for SF or not.. I have a 2332cc.  For a 1915cc, I'd personally not go with the SF.  Engines are happiest when the exhaust is "right sized".

I have not modified the tail pipes.  Here is another view.  They end right about mid bumper.  I do have to clean up the underside of the bumper now and then, but I like where the tail pipes end from a styling perspective.

Ted-

exhaust:  just ordered the exhaust.  I will post a follow up upon receipt/install.  I'm targeting week of October 21.

Hard top: i had Kirk build it w/ the car. I have been delinquent posting some pictures (others have been asking).  fit and finish is great, and for Seattle- where it rains more often than not, it's a vast improvement over the soft top.  Visibility is excellent.

I could not be happier.  Glasspar tops are out of my price range... though they look nice!

attached are some pix.

Thanks.  had the car built as close as i could to match my fathers original February 1957 356.(with some improvement's I thought would make the car a more reliable and fun driver ;-). His barely see's the outdoors now days!!

The plexi windows work well.  Much better than the curtains- no flapping at speed, keeps most water and wind out at speed and parked.  And much better visibility.

Drove around last week with a standard side curtain on one side, plexi on the other.

we had thunderstorms here all of last week.   water came down in bucket loads for 15-30 minutes at a time, several times a day.

i personally prefer the plexi for the reasons mentioned above.  water does come in at the vertical windshield to plexi joint. Surprisingly only at this point... Even when parked and considering the hardtop does not have a drip rail around the door. ( which I was prepared to install, but was pleasantly surprised after a week of driving the car in the rain, so I will be returning it.)

(Attached picture of current gap.)

the experiment was worth while... But took the better part of this week to dry off the passenger side interior.

Still playing with the fit,  I just need  "the right" foam trim piece to seal off the vertical windshield joint...  that's this weekends project!!!

The seal around the hardtop to plexi is good.. There is a piece of rubber foam trim the plexi rest on when the door is closed- took some effort to find the right foam trim I could use for the plexi/top joint.

and now that I have the hardware, and a window shape that fits the car well, making replacements as these get scratched/worn/damaged will be easy. Plexi is cheap!

happy to send more pictures.  Cheers

Good timing.  The exhaust went in this past weekend.  Engine was out to address various transmission leaks-  in relation to the weekends work statement, the exhaust was a breeze to replace.

Fit is excellent.  No mods or cut outs required. Build of exhaust is excellent- beautiful welds.  Placing the order and shipping was also a breeze- the owner was curtious and addressed all my questions.  All required parts included (got some extra ones actually), and shipment received within a week of order.

One item not addressed by supplier was the import tax/duty- 18$ payable to Fed-Ex after clearing customs.

(i will send pictures of it installed later tonight... but gaps/spacing virtually identical to Chris H. pictures above. (BTW- thank you for the pictures and advice)

Very happy with sound (deeper than the Tril-mill delivered on my VS), and product... though my driving has been limited due to rain!

My first impression is that it is a quieter, with a much deeper (low end frequency) sound...   but I have been driving with the hardtop on which does provide some sound protection.  I do like the sound better than the higher pitched Tri-mill.

I did install p/n 155-204-5200 on my 1915 engine.  This was the exhaust manufacturer's recommendation for my engine size.  155-204-52FS part number is targeted for cars with larger +125hp engines.

We did have a break in the rain this afternoon, and took the car out for a short  drive to pick up my daughter from soccer practice.  What great fun.  Hopefully we will continue to enjoy a day or two a week of dry weather to keep finding excuses to take the car out for a stroll.

Quick update now that I have put about 90 miles on the now exhaust.

Good- better power at higher RPMs- freeway speeds.  Wonderful sound... managed to klick up a call on the cell while driving, and I could hear/be heard. ( so quieter than tri-mil.

Disappointed- the white heat insulation sleeve on the exhaust to heater box pipe (see above picture) was removed today.  When exhaust got up to temperature on freeway it started to smoke/no flame/but black/chared/ fumes in cabin.. Gave me a good potential fire scare!

When touched, it fell apart, like burned paper.. clearly not the heat shield I expected.  I will be replacing it with exhaust wrap soon, but for now just driving with out the heat shield.

overall very happy with exhaust, fit, and quality (to date).

will post pictures when I download from BB
