Hi guys, putting together my speedster and try to figure out best style and location to mount and external oil cooler. Could anybody share what they have and maybe why one way or another is the best? :-) You guys always have such great info and help

We only use Setrab coolers and I like the single fan pack. They are pricey but QUALITY.
We have enough room under our rear package tray to hang it there and it is out of the way, easy to plumb to, and it doesn't require being in direct forced air flow to be efficient, the SPAL fan does the trick.
You can use the Magnifying Glass on this site to find more info. Search for "oil cooler location". Here's one:

Greg is right. There are a lot of different ways folks have handled the location of external coolers. TLDR version is a lot of us found the space in the driver's side rear wheel well to be a reasonable option. +1 on the Setrab coolers.
I've got a 96 plate EMPI in the driver's side fenderwell. It works "fine", but a Setrab would be better.
.
Keep in mind, there's no 'off-the-shelf' installation kit for this.
I have a Setrab in the driver's wheel well, but an experienced mechanic fabricated the mounting hardware. And putting it in the wheel well will require some protective plate or housing to protect the cooler and fan from road debris.
Setrab does offer generic mounting kits, I think, but some custom fabrication almost always needs to be done.
.
x2 under the rear seat area..... easy to install
Should the oil filter and especially the oil cooler be relatively level with the engine oil sump? Seems if oil cooler was mounted much higher, the oil would run back and swamp engine sump. Some oil filter have an anti-drain valve but not all. Since OEM sump only holds 2.5 quarts - even an addition quart would be alot.

My DeRale 16-pass cooler is located in the driver's rear wheel well and maybe 12" higher than the engine sump. I have an additional sump of about 1.5 quarts and I add oil until it is mid-way between marks on the dipstick. The external oil filter (Napa Gold FIL 1515 or a WIX 51515) is about even with the sump. I've never had an issue with oil draining into the sump from the cooler and over-filling it.
The oil cooler on my Spyder was well above the level of the sump and the filter and it never drained into the sump. Those lines were always full! I checked!
Having an extra quart or two under pressure in the Accusump likelwise did not overfill my oil pan. That engine liked it best reading between a half and a quart down so that's where I kept it.
Thanks so much for replying. Of great info from everybody!
