Going to be chaning my oil soon as I have now been able to amass 250 miles.  The external filter that came on the car is the PH8A Fram filter and I have been reading a lot of different sites about this being a really bad filter.  I called Fram and asked if the PH1 filter would work and the guy sounded like he was pretty sure it would work.  I cant go with pretty sure.  So, I am asking all of you that have the external oil filter what you use...specifically on the VS motor.

Thanks and appreciate any help you can provide.

Todd-

You're over-thinking this.

The Fram dude can't tell you if it'll fit or not, because he has no idea where it's mounted, and how much space is available underneath it. Neither do I. Neither does anybody else who isn't laying under the car looking up at it. From everything I'm seeing, there is no "standard Vintage Speedster procedure" for anything.

If you are happy with the physical size of what you've got, just go to a parts store that sells Wix filters and cross it over. If you'd like a bigger filter (and you've got room for it)-- take the filter off, and go to the same Wix-selling auto-parts store, and match the threads to something bigger.

Buy 2. Change your oil once a year. Be happy.

Thanks everyone.  Wix sounds like the way to go.  My concern with fitting isnt the physical space it holds...i told him about the set up as well but my concern was the size of the o ring and just general overall size to make sure it fits on to the piece it goes in to.  Hows that for technical jargon!!!

Yeah, your rpms on starting should go down with temperature, very real chance of blowing an oil filter off, UNLESS you use a Wixx 51515R. Get it at NAPA. The R means racing and means it can handle higher pressure than a standard filter. The ONLY filter I will ever use on my Spyder. Period. It will not rupture or leak or blow off.

Looks like the threads are the same as Fram PH8A:

Just make sure the length is ok, 5.4 " long by 4" around. The threads and gasket are the same fitment as your Fram, Todd.

I always have to order them, my local NAPA doesn't stock them. But they are usually there the next day anyway, I buy 2 or 4 depending on how much I feel like spending.

Basically, you are looking for three things in decreasing order, and they all come with a Wix 51515R (which is the only one I use, too):

1.  Really good filtering - the Wix is the best

2.  Able to handle high pressure (over 100 psi) when temps are cold and oil is thick - why?  Because under 40°F when starting up, an external filter can easily see well over 100psi and possibly rupture the outer can, puking a LOT of oil all over your driveway.

3.  Ford/MOPAR thread and o-ring compatibility - that's what all of these external filter adapters are, so you can use any FRAM PH1 compatible filter in an emergency.

Good info, ALB. Oops, I thought I had great filtration too! The burst strength is 290 psi, should be enough. Maybe the 51515 is cheaper than the R also? It has the same bypass valve as the R too. 61 microns is .0024 ", or 2.5 thousandths. 20 microns is 0.0007", or 7 ten-thousands, pretty small.

One thing to note, Wix publishes their specs, not really available for other manufacturers as to flow rate, efficiency, and micron rating.

I knew none of this stuff before now and just used what was recommended to me.

Looks like 4-6 dollars each for 51515, the R just about doubles that at NAPA.
